what is your philosophy on gadget/trick plays?
be it formational, trickery, gray area of the rule type plays,
how many do you carry each week? when do you use them?
I just wanted to see what others thought process was on this

I don't use them a ton. We usually carry about 3 trick plays/game. The reason I don't usually use them is probably because I talk myself out of them. I'm a wuss.

I don't like to spend practice time on something that may work once because of the trick value. That being said, some of the other coaches like them and we usually have 1 or 2 per game.

I have heard some good coaches talk and they do not refer to them as trick plays but game changers. By this when they need to make something happen they go to them. They use a 10 minute period each day to work on game changers. The said it is not only about changing the game but giving the players something to get excited about.

We practice a new gadget play each week. We try and design it according to what the defense is doing. We will try and take 3-4 min. each week on Thursday's to use our gadgets.

I've gotten away from them but I'm going to start up again this season. It adds a lot of fun for the kids and the fans and can be a real momentum changer. I was a guard and I always loved the "bommerooski" or guard around play. I will spend a few minutes working on them - not much more than that in the weekly plan.

Seems like Highland Park (Dallas area) uses quite a few. Their coach might be one to contact about the use of tricks, etc.

I love gadget plays. We usually have a 5 minute period the day before the game and "walk thru" the gadget plays that we have for the week. At that point we had only gone over them on the board in front of the team. Also, one thing we did was design an "opener", the very first play of the game that had a little trickery built into it from our base offense and that play was different every week but VERY VERY successful. We had one touchdown (80 yards) and averaged at least 20 yards each opening play. Our head coach said this once to me about gadget plays and I'll never forget it. He said that after the defense gives up a big play, that's when I like to use them. Sure enough we had a shovel pass go for about 30 yards. The next play we ran a reverse that went for another 30 yards down to the one yard line.
If successful, gadget plays has turned the tide in many important games . . . three off hand are the Steelers Super Bowl win two years ago, Randel El to Hines Ward, The Titans Music City Miracle play in the AFC Wild Card round and in college football back in 2001 I think it was close to #1 vs. #2 with Nebraska and Oklahoma. Oklahoma tried a pitch reverse pass that fell incomplete and later in the game Nebraska tried the same thing that went for a TD and I think Nebraska won by a TD or 10 points.

I think they should be used early in the game. You do them before they do you.
We ran the bounce pass double pass at the Boise State camp two weeks ago and the BSU staff loved it.

We have 2 run and 2 pass, plus our fake punts. We practice them during the regular team time (run or pass) each week - usually with different personel to make sure we're not dependent on one or two kids. We may not run one every week but if we feel the timing is right, we'll be ready.

agree with whoever said they aren't really "gadgets" but more "game changers" ... these are things such as: a reverse a half-back pass or "double" pass a flea-flicker a quarterback throwback
things that go well with some of your base stuff and require little amount of practice time once you initially install and learn them

how many do you carry each week? when do you use them? One-two a week, and early. And I don't use the grey area stuff at all, the plays I run are legal and I go over them with the officials pre-game.

we started out our homecoming game with a "game changer" . we run the fly, gave it to our fly(who is also our backup QB) then he bubbled back and threw it deep to our fastest kid running a fade, his corner got sucked up on the fly fake and he was open by 20 yards, we scored a 60 yard TD first play of the game, id say that gives a team some momentum, then we went on to win 54-6

funny story (or sad) that is similar to coachbdud's story: early in my career i was the play-caller for the freshmen team and we were playing the "stud" freshmen team of one of our district opponents. we had practiced all week on a "lonesome polecat" type of scheme (had about 3 things from it based on alignment). we received opening kickoff and returned it to the 35. first play, we align in that set and defense scatters all confused. we run qb up the middle for 65 yd TD. rest of the game, doesn't go so well for us as we lost 50-7 ... lol but, hey, at least we scored
