For those of you coaches that have coached or even do coach at the pee-wee level do you think that it is fair to "scout" your opponent?

why not? Is it supposed to be unethical? Could there be a better use of time? maybe.....but some of us don't have hobbies, y'know.

Yes, I think it's fair to scout at the pee-wee level. We filmed all of our oponents, and they all filmed us.

I've seen it mentioned several times, at both youth and high school, that filming an opponent is unethical in some way. Here in CA there's no film exchange so if you want film you get it yourself.
How is filming an opponent get to be unethical/inappropriate?

it really depends on the state or league rules... the state of New Mexico will not let teams use video equipment to scout an opponent, but must rely on first-hand observations and film exhange. In Oregon, we could use anything but a computer or PDA.
All the youth leagues i have worked with usually didnt care what we did for scouting as long as WE the coaches did it.

If your league says "you cant scout/film" then DONT FREAKING DO IT! what kind of Coach would break the rules to win? lack of ethics, morality, value system all screwed up...yeah, those are the kind that I want my kid to play for. ::)If the league says "go ahead and film, scout etc" then GO AHEAD AND DO IT. 8-)Sportsmanship is what its all about at the young ages especially...as you can see, a lack of sportsmanship trickles UP.

i coached the littles guys for 6 yrs. and never filmed or scouted anything. in the beginning of the season all the teams would come together for a scrimage, at that time i would note formation motions and what ever trick plays they are running, or at that level attempting to run. to me its a waist of time they're pee wee's, the more coaches get complicated with that group the more he loses. just focus on the basic for offense and defense you can win at that level with one play performed perfectly and throw a trick play in to keep the kids excited. on defense contain, contain, contain with presuit, presuit, presuit is the best pee wee D in the country.

If your league does not forbid it....then it is legal, then it is NOT unethical to film. How can it be? If the other coaches choose not to film, well they are either too busy or too lazy, and you and your team should not be penalized for their problems. Coach YOUR team the way YOU seem fit. Again, as long as it is legal you are OK. I have seen 4th/5th/6th Grade level teams scout games - so now level is too small to film. I coach in a league that allows us to film and scout other teams within the league. I like to scout other teams when I have the time, and for my team, I have film study one day a week for an hour and fifteen minuets. In my garage I have a DVD/VCR machine and a pretty nice TV set up. We watch our game first and look at what we did. Then for the last 20 -30 minuets we look at the team we are going to play. On my level, and in my league, a lot of the teams are the same - it just depends where they put the stud kid at. So I try to teach my kids the key formations, personnel, and the plays run from these. Even though it is legal to scout we have had some coaches do unethical stuff - the alleged Gray area of a black and white rule. Like Coach Calande said - is this the type of coach you want YOUR kid to play for ?? This one coach would come out to practices and try to film practice. A clear ethical violation, and IMO, something that deserves a kick in the A$$. It is the actions like this that give scouting a game a bad reputation.
