Head man just resigned and I'm too young to apply for the HC job (im still in college working on my degree). Looks like my old HC from when I played at the school a few years ago might be one of the candidate to take the program back over. I know its not likely that I'll retain my DC position but any suggestions as to how I should go about this process? I don't have many options because I don't have my degree for another year and a half. I've never worked for anyone else before so I guess thats why I'm a little uneasy about the situation. Your thoughts....

If you want to be a football coach, get used to working for plenty of different people, especially early on. You can learn something from all of them. Don't get wrapped up in your title, yeah its fun to be a coordinator but as young as you are that opportunity will come around again, especially if you can learn more from other staffs.

If you are not applying for the head job, let the powers who will do the hiring (principal, AD) know that you want to be loyal to the school and you want to work for whoever is hired as the new coach. After a HC is hired - drop in to congratulate him and give him the same message. Good assistants are hard to find - I would be surprised if the new coach wouldn't sit down and talk with you. Whether or not you stay on as DC should not be as important as staying in coaching and adding to your resume.

I agree with everyone else. I know you don't want to step down from the DC position, but you will get back there and will also keep your options open for when you do get your degree.

lots of good advice given here. fbdoc said it best, good assistant coaches are hard to find. It sounds like you are on the right track, so just remain positive, communicate with your AD and let him know your intentions. Stay involved with the off-season strength program and keep working with the kids. Best of luck coach!

1) interview for an assitant job with the new guy. This will give you an opportunity to see if you even WANT to come back next year, as well as give you experience with football interviews.
2) If it were me, I'd volunteer at the local college (if they have FB)- if not maybe work with the youth leagues.....something to keep you IN the game (change of scenery does wonders for forcing us to learn a new aspect of the game)....but still allowing you to focus on completing your degree. If your school HAS football, DO NOT pass up the opportunity to help their program out....the amount of information and lessons you can learn from a dedicated staff like that are invaluable.

My boss just told me yesterday he will be stepping down, but he is not going to make it public until after Turkey Day. My question is this- What do I do now? I know I want the job, but, is it in poor taste for me to tell the AD that I want the job before it becomes public. FYI- I am currently the Varsity DC I would like to think that I have a great shot at it.

I am in the same boat as chiefscoach. It just became public last night, HC resigned. I don't work for the school system, but do want to to continue with the program once a new HC is hired. Good advice so far.
