Hi coaches,
Just curious to hear what some HC's expectations are for their coaches. i.e. weightroom, meetings, etc.
Thanks, FCC

I coach youth but I expect assistants to study and go to meetings/clinics/camps just like I do.
If I was HC in a school program they would be manning the weight room and off season practices as well as going to clinics. There is no excuse for not bettering yourself in the off season, players and coaches alike.

I think its a good idea to have your assistants sign up for duties. there are off season duties and there are inseason duties ...some guys are more available for wt room coverage than they are for other things for example.
spell it out and make coaching contracts, covers your rear end and makes everyone happy that there arent any "you didnt fulfil your duties and meet expectations" and the assistant says "you never gave me any expectations"...

Dcohio and others,
What are your thoughts on an assistant coach who meets all commitments and responsibilities from June -end of season but then chooses not to participate(or at least participate regularly) in the off season i.e. weightroom, conditioning. I guess my question is is there a place for someone like this in a program or has coaching high school football become a year round job for all assistant coaches? The reason I ask is because I am personally finding myself on the fence in this situation. I meet any and all expectations from summer camp through the season(as I konow all of you do) but I have trouble justifiying 3-5 days a week in the weightroom during the offseason. Not that I don't like being with the kids, but I feel the off season is time for me to catch up on duties as a father and husband. I guess in the end, I still view football as a fall sport and I cosider myself a fall coach. Anyways, any thoughts. Is there a place for a "fall coach" or is time for me to think about getting out? p.s. I have no probelm with 2-3 clinics that we go to or monthly meetings. I'm talking more about the expectation of 3-4 days a week in the weightroom from Nov.-June.

I can't say what mine would be but I can tell you what is expected of me as an assistant:
Man the weight room once a week (I have Mondays). Recruit @ the school I teach in (We are a coop) IE Hit up the strong basketball and baseball programs in the off season and do the hallway recruiting thing as well as to man the booth at the 8th grade introduction night thingy. Report to the boss once a month on "professional development" IE what I'm reading or whatever...

Here is what i expect of my Varsity assistants in the offseason. From December-June I expect them to attend 1 meeting a week (we try to keep it short and will cancel if we don't have anything to discuss). Be visible in the weight room (I don't require more than one appearance a week). I also give each assistant repsonsibility for some aspect of our program. Examples of these responsibilities are planning the youth summer camp, organizing our summer strength program, keeping track of our in the building recruiting list and team/prospect social events, putting together our discount card fundraiser, developing the character development curriculum for the upcoming season, etc. We do have coaches who are only around during the season, and there is a place for them in our program it just isn't at the varsity level.
