We have seen the post about the haka, is there anything that your players do such as this, a pregame ritual, to get them fired up before a football game?

These past two years we haven't really done anything to get the kids fired up for a game, we like to let them take care of it themselves.
I found sometimes when I was giving speeches, the more philosophical I got the less they understood (I'm at the MS level). So basically we as coaches decided to let the captains fire their teammates up in their own way (7th grade was more stoic, with just the captains talking while 8th grade liked to get into one big circle and "sway" side to side and then would get pumped up).
It also hard to pump kids up when you don't have a locker room to give a pregame speech in (Our MS is being rebuilt, so we were a transient football team lol). When the school is finally completed (should be before next season) I am sure we will be able to pump them up better.

macarana When I finished with my above post calande yours had popped up above mine, that is the funniest mental image I have had of a football team in a while. I think that would be great mental warfare against the other team... ;D

I take a page from Markham...we just rep plays after a few live angle tackling drills or live double team drills...i think all that dancing and chanting stuff is nonsense. i have seen some HORRENDOUS teams put out some great chants if ya know what i mean. they should spend more time on fundamentals and executing their plays than dancing and singing.

We do our on field warmup ( dynamics and such ) before going inside for a quick pep talk / focus chat/ When we come back out the kids run through the cheer banner and do their own rah rah yell and scream before coming to the sidelines for coin toss, pledge, and prayer. That dancing and chanting stuff is great to watch - it does look really cool - but as coachcalande said, you better be able to back it up with some football, otherwise you are missing the point of playing!

Interesting story.
At my former school we were playing one of our biggest rivals. Their mascot is "The Lobo's" and they will have this exceptionally annoying wolf howl played over the loudspeakers at the beginning of the game and also after they make a big play. We had not beaten them at their place in a number of years and really needed a shot of adrenaline as they were the 2 time defending state champions.
We found a recording and dubbed about 1 hour's worth of wolf howls. We would play them everytime we did agilities, conditioning, individual work, etc. over the loudspeakers. About 1/2 way through practice on Tuesday the players began to complain very loudly about the recording. We continued to play it the rest of the week.
As we are warming up for the game, it is clear that our heads are not in it. Kids are joking and screwing up assignments. Coaches are yelling and throwing hats and it is a huge mess. All of the sudden their announcer decides to hit the wolf howl on the loudspeakers. You could have heard a pin drop on our side of the field. Immeditely the intensity went through the roof and it was clear that we were now ready to play. We came out of the locker room like a ball of fire and proceeded to win the game.
I wouldn't want to do this every week, but it worked in this case. Getting kids fired up won't work if you are a far inferior team, but against a tough, fairly equal opponent, every edge you can get helps.

I used to eat a whole large pizza in front of the kids before a game.....does that count? These pregame rituals work best when the PLAYERS institute them, I would think. I think 98% of the country starts with that "Any dogs in the house.." call and response.

i take a .... well, i read the paper, let's say ... then i take a shower and get dressed in my coaching attire. this process starts 20 minutes before position meetings. after meetings (we have about 15 minutes before the 1st group takes the field for pre-game) i put a big fat dip in and sit down and do absolutely nothing ... i mean, go catatonic.
then, i'm good to go ... lol
