In nearly all the articles I have read with any depth on the USC football program, almost every one makes mention of USCs competitive practices. That USC instills competition in several facets of the program. Much is now being said of Lane Kiffin doing the same with the Raiders, to the players delight.
Do any of you have knowledge of what they (USC/Oakland) do to instill competition?

Coach:
I am a high school Coach in Georgia, and our Staff Visited USC for Spring Clinic/Practice. It was the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed. Pete Carroll is amaizing....he and his practices are very up tempo and Competitve...His Strength Coach Chris Carlise is amaizing....worth the trip....we have modeled our Practice Schedule and incorporated Competition in our off Season....results have been Excellent 1 State Championship 1 State Runner up.....they are way ahead of the game....

Carroll does a great job, but one factor is they have so much great talent that even with the intense competition and hitting, they are still going to have a great player playing the spot regardless of who gets banged up. Guys that are h.s. legends around here ( socal) go there and they never see the field. They'll have 5 unbelievable talents fighting for 2 inside lber spots and they'll kill each other to play. I don't think the apporach would work at Oregon State. Of course, they can do this because they recruit so well. Back in the 90s when SC was losing every other year to Oregon, Oregon State, Wash. State etc they were still getting half the studs here and getting beat by schools that took the 1A guys. Now they get 80-90 % of the best studs and good luck if you're playing them.

I agree they do have tremendous talent...but there is a reason that now they are keeping the blue chippers home and and successful nationally (they did not under Palmer, Tollner)...I believe it is the current staff....i have attended practices at USC, Georgia, Tech, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, thru the years...and only Florida this spring even comes close....I have heard Shiano(sp Rutgers) and I beleive his practices would be very competeive....but the secret to USC is that the kids have bought in and they think outside the box....If I were going to become the Head Coach at any D I school (which I am not), I would hire Chris Carlise (USC), Mickey Morinetti (Sp Fla) or Dave Van Halenger @ UGA...they set the tempo....as long as Carroll remains he will continue to recruit well and they will win!

Iron sharpens iron!! When your 2's and 3's are as good as alot of schools 1's, then your kids will be better prepared. If you have no depth and your 1's are scorching a terrible scout team, your going to struggle come game time. ave quality depth lights a fire under that kid holding the #1 spot because if ever lets up, just a little, he's on the bench watching. Teams that lack that quality depth are prone to get a little lazy because no one is pushing their 1's.

Regarding the topic of this thread and the original post, this thread is a bust. I was very curious in this topic.

Coach,
Can you give specfic examples regarding "we have modeled our Practice Schedule and incorporated Competition in our off Season" I doubt I'll ever get to USC to see it myself. Our school up here in Michigan wouldn't even reimburse me for a two cups of coffee if Pete Carroll himself came to see me! So I'm guessing sending me to USC is out of the question.
