I am sure there are worse stories but this is going to be a rough week.
The Fires here in So Cal have caused mass rescheduling of games or cancellations. Our county put all public schools on lock down and no team could practice indoors or outdoors until tomorrow Monday. All events were canceled. Now most of the county is playing 2 games this next week. We are playing Monday and Friday. Monday we are playing the #9 team who has lost to the #5 team in the nation and another regionally ranked team. And on Friday we play our rival who is the #6 team in the county. We are currently #4. If that is not bad enough a player from last years team was killed Friday night in a traffic accident. It is very hard on many of the current players who are good friends with the young man. The funeral is Friday morning. This is going to be one of the hardest weeks to get through. I think I will end up having to have a few days off (which will not happen) just to get through the emotional drain of the week. All of the boys will be in the same boat but be drained emotionally and physically.

wow, coach. thats alot on your plate. time to circle the wagons, keep your focus as brst you can, and see who your warriors are. its a good life lesson for them. tell them that in the overall picture, a h.s football game pales in comparison and that after h.s life will become MUCH harder. good luck and my thoughts are with you

I really do not have any words that will help you and your team get through this tough time, but I wanted to let you know I will be pulling for you guys and I really do wish you the best of luck. If you could keep us posted on the whole situation and I am sure we will all learn something that might help us if a similer situation occurs for one of us. Good luck.

Well, here is the low down this week. We lost on Monday 9-7. We played great on D. We gave up 125 yards passing at 50% to a QB that commited to UCLA as a Junior. They rushed for 55. We had 8 sacks and many hits on the QB when he did throw. In the second half they only had one drive longer than 3 plays. Problem was we turned the ball over 4 times on O. We all know turn overs will beat you every time. We were moving the ball well in the second half but turned it over or would stall out. Overall our guys played very hard and I was very proud of the whole team. Our JV kids won today 28-14 but I lost my long snapper, special team, and nickel back soph. Tomorrow is the funneral for the young man who died. I am having a meeting with our D at 2:00pm to try to get us refocused on why we play football. Most of these kids were freshman when my Dad passed and I coached many of them in track when it happened. I think that this will be a great time for some life lessons and hopefully it will convey to the field. CMow5 thanks for the article, great stuff and really helps with perspective this week. I will report back in a few days about how everything has gone.

Best of luck aztec, hope things get better for you and your team soon. These kids are going to be looking for someone to reasure them that the world is still a good place. If you can coach your kids on the game of life as well you get them coached up on the field, things should be back to normal soon.

Well the week is coming to and end and it has been a long one. We ended up beating our rival 30-24 and knocking down 2 passes in the endzone to win on Friday night. Our kids really responded this week. We lost Monday night 9-7 and we had 4 turn overs on Friday most of the team was at the funeral for a player from last years squad. We ran for 420 yards with 0 turnovers and passed for 0 yards (how do you like that). We forced 2 second half turn overs both which lead to scores. Finally we will have a normal week. I just want to thank those who sent PM's and the words of encouragement. This week if we win we will be league champions for the 3rd straight year. It will be a co-championship because of the loss on monday but what place for playoffs will be determined by another game which is also for the championship.
