ALWAYS trying to get better for the sake of your own personal growth, for better ways to help the kids excel, and looking for ways to coordinate tasks with your staff.

Don't know if I like the question. I got into coaching so I wouldn't have to "Work" for a living.
I guess my answer would be IF you are NOT doing the following, you're taking it too easy.
Planning every minute/drill of every practice. Being true to yourself - yeller, quiet guy, fire and brimstone, pat on the butt ... being YOU. Motivator for your players and for your staff! Watching Video Running the Weight Room Running the Off Season-Summer Making recruiting phone calls and videos Visiting kids and parents in their home Being the visable Leader of your Team Spending time with family - NOT "bragging" (even to yourself) that you stay in the office till Midnight watching tape and game planning - that tells me you're not very efficient! Go home and spend some time with the wife and kids because you'll never get it back!
Just a start...

Be intense enough to get the job done, but relaxed enough to enjoy it.
Make sure you have done everything in your power to give the kids a chance to compete. The "luxury" of coaching is winning - don't lose when you should've won.
Game time, be luck a duck - calm on the surface, but paddle like heck underneath.
Work hard, work smart. Sometimes, this means: Take a break! Too much of a good thing, even football, is still too much.

Let's see, I coach football in the fall, guide goose hunters in the winter, guide fly fishermen in the summer, and oversee a few farms. Sounds like I've never worked a day, BUT. . .
In each and every one of those things, I've done whatever it takes to be the best I can be and make the ones who depend on me have every opportunity to reach their own goals and dreams.

People tell you that you are obsessed, that you need to take some time off, or get some other hobbies. I like what Bum Phillips said in an interview, "I took one week off in 30 years and I HATED it" "Hobbies, I didnt have any hobbies- football was my hobby, it was my first love and last love." "All the good coaches are like that". Those are signs that you working hard.

since all the teachers are referring to the "No Child Left Behind" as "No Teacher Left Standing", I guess there will only be us coaches left to do what is right for our kids.

I'm not much of a Lou fan because he bailed on us Gopher lovers years ago for the touchdown Jesus, but here is a good quote about football and comittment and hardwork.
"If you don't make a total commitment to whatever you're doing, then you start looking to bail out the first time the boat starts leaking. It's tough enough getting that boat to shore with everybody rowing, let alone when a guy stands up and starts putting his jacket on. " --Lou Holtz, College football coach College football coach

i don't work, ever. getting up and going to the field house is what gets me outta bed everyday. its the only thing that is important (other than my kids) in the universe. i'm with huey, passion doesn't even begin to describe it.
my dad told e years ago: "find out what you love to do and then figure out a way to get paid to do it." he has spent the last 35 years making more money than i'll ever see, and wishes he did something else. he has told me my whole life to do what i love, not what will make me rich. he was right, i can't imagine anything else.
i coach, its who i am.
