Coaches, a question on how you guys run practice. Do you feel its better to have a young (3rd string) QB running scout team offense (our #2 is on the defense) or to have a coach run it. We have done both in the past. Having a coach run scout will give the defense a better look as he will understand the goals of the plays more. However, I'd like to get our young guy some experience. But I'm not sure if scout team qb is good for his confidence. I'd appreciate any input. Thanks

We will do it depending on the type of offense we are looking at. If there's a lot of motion or misdirection, a coach will do it. But if its simpler stuff we let the kids do it.

When you say "run the scout team"...what exactly do you mean?
Do you simply mean who is actually playing the QB position, or do you mean who is organizing the huddle, calling the plays, etc?

Our head coach often plays scout team QB in team or half-line drills, and this has been ery good for us. He will leave ths script if he sees a weakness in the defense. He often tells us (defensive staff) the strenghts/weaknesses of what we're doing as he sees it from the other side. Having him do this has been a big help.

I rotate my #1 and #2 in on scout team. We are pretty much 2 way players, but by havin our #1 QB run scout team we get alot more out of scout team.

I think if your Back up qb can give you a good look thats the best way to go but if not then you have to use a Coach or Starter or someone else.

I think it depends on how many snaps the young kid is getting. If he is getting a lot of snaps with the 1st team then leave him with the first team, however if he is mainly sitting on the sidelines let him run the scout team.

I mean play qb. A coach will always organize and call plays. Thanks a lot for your replies coaches. Some good ideas. They main reason I like for a fellow coach, or myself, to run scout qb is for what bluboy said. You can definately see different things in the defense when you are under center, vs. simply observing the defense.
