I'm amazed that WVa hasn't gotten more respect in the polls. Between Slaton and White, they've got 2 solid Heisman candidates.
What's your guys' take on this?

That they play in the Big East and that hurts them

Preseason polls mean nothing. The last 3 preseason picks to win the SEC have been wrong...take these things with a grain of salt.
I agree with you, but the teams ahead of them (in the USA Top 25 poll) are legit as well.
1. USC - you can't deny this- Carroll says "...the most competitive team I've ever coached"
2. LSU - Strongest defense in SEC/possibly NCAA
3. Florida - Regardless, out of respect for last season, they have to be #1,2,3
4. Texas - Will be STRONG as usual- Big 12 Champs
5. Michigan - Carr will get out of his slump of having lost his final 2 games in each of his last 3 seasons and beat Ohio State and win a bowl game...
6. West Virginia - 17 starters returning, have to fill the hole left by Dan Mozes at center, Slaton/White combo is nasty, success predicates on the play of their defense.
ALL OF THIS IMO OF COURSE

That they play in the Big East and that hurts them True, but those games between them, Louisville, and Rutgers should be goodies! IMO, if anyone of those teams can run the table, they'll play for a national championship.

I was really surprised by Florida also; they return a ton of talent; I figured they'd either sit at #1 or #2.
Yeah, the Big East is light and that does hurt them. But then again, so is the Pac-10. You're talkin about a conference that had several teams lose to WAC programs. I know USC is a powerhouse, but just once I like to see them take a hit in the rankings for playing in the PAC-10.

That's kinda hard whenever they keep decimating teams in their bowl games (ala Michigan) Yeah, but so do a lot of SEC teams and they play in a nasty conference..... Look at Florida from last year; WORKED Ohio State in the National Title after working their way through a tough SEC schedule. USC beats Michigan in the same manner, plays in a weaker conference, yet still gets the #1 nod.

USC keeps proving themselves against elite competition, and didn't lose as much talent as Flordia did--------why I am arguing this? I really don't even care about preseason polls.....
You tricked me coachcb!

I don't know about the Pac 10 comment. Sure, it's not the SEC, but with USC, UCLA, Oregon, Oregon St., and Cal, it shouldn't be cupcake city either.

Biggest difference between SEC and any conference isn't the top teams.
You just don't get an off week. Even Vandy and Kentucky are relatively tough games these days. Not too mention that going on the road to 8 or 9 of the SEC stadiums will top most anybody any any of conference.
We just don't have anything else down here to do. We don't even have shoes for crying out loud.

Over half of their OCC conference games are against teams in middle to lower conferences. Yes, they do play some tough SEC, Big 12, and Big 10 schools, but a huge chunk of their OCC schedule is against weaker teams. Plus Of course the SEC teams schedule weaker teams in their OCC schedule. When you play teams like Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU and Auburn, you don't need to schedule big out of conference games. You're conference games have enough land mines in there. Last year, the 2nd to worst record in the SEC East was 8-5.

I'll give you that the SEC is the best conference top to bottom but the PAC 10 is as good as anybody else. Nobody has lost more big bowl games than the Big 10.

Did West Virginia, Louisville or Rutgers beat any one other than themselves last season?
Do they have all 22 starters coming back with all their backups from last year?
Where is the love coming from other than they are from the east coast (that's where the majority of the nation's writers are)?

Two of the three seem like flash in the pans to me. West Virginia has a good run every 15 years or so. Wasn't it like 1990 or so when they were undefeated and then lost the bowl game. I don't remember the specifics.

I still don't think the PAC-10 is up there with the Big Ten, Bigh 12, or even the ACC. Several of the better (record wise) teams in the conference had a rough time against WAC and Mountain West teams last year. 1.SEC 2. Big 10 (come on- Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio State all finished with double digit wins) 3. Big 12 4. ACC 5. PAC-10 6. Big East

Thanks for the research Huey (seriously, I do appreciate it).
But that is what I thought. All of those teams are cupcakes (IMO). The only team out of any of them that might be considered cake (rather than cupcake) is GA Tech. But, you can't really give GT that much credit in terms of BIG status; they lost to Notre Dame at home. So how does Louisville, Rutgers and West VA have any national ranking???

On the subject of out of conference games.
Yeah Alabama starts out with Western Carolina and also mixes in Houston and La. Monroe. But there also the stretch of games after going Vandy (not as easy as it used to be) that includes Arkansas, Florida State, and Georgia. There aren't many teams, in any conference, that would come out unblemished like that.
Just about every SEC team has a stretch of games like that.
Auburn starts with Kansas State and no name South Florida who beat the golden boys from West Virginia last year. They also get the "cupcake" stretch @ Florida, Vandy, then they go to Arkansas and to LSU in back to back weeks.

USC is going to have a tough OCC schedule this year (and last year); Arkansas and then Nebraska. If they can get through those 2 games unscathed, then they've earned their #1 spot.
As far as WVa goes, I can see how they ended up at #6; the teams above them were great last year against tough schedules.
At this point, I'm surprised the sports writers don't have them hyped through the roof because of Slaton and White.
Either way, it's going to be an entertaining year in college football. Who do you guys have down as a dark horse; I'm lookin at Texas A&M and Missouri.

Miami wasn't exactly Miami last year but Louisville handled them very easily - and lost their starting QB in the game and still beat them by several touchdowns.
