There are many ways to improve the NFL ot structure. That really is not what I am here to discuss on this thread although I am pretty sure that is what this thread will become.
I think that in every game, whoever wins the coins toss at the very beginning, should have the option to take the ball first in ot. In other words, add that as an option. No matter what, it should be known who gets the ball first in ot before the game starts. That way teams have a chance to do something about it during the game.
For instance, I am down 7 and score on the last play of the game. I know that the other team will get the ball first. So maybe my best chance to win the game is to go for 2 right now. Maybe not. That is not the debate. The debate is that I should already know how that coin has flipped.
If that is added in to the original coin flip, I would imagine, the flip would go like this.
The winner will take ball in ot.
The loser will defer
The winner will take ball
The loser will choose what side.
Side note: I don't like the original coin flip. I think the visiting team should just get first choice. Neutral site - flip a coin.

I think I was in attendance at the only NFL game where the OT coin flip winner decided to kick off so they could choose which end they wanted to defend. 2002 Lions @ Bears in Champaign. Marty Morningheg decided to kick to the Bears so they could have the wind at their back in OT. Bears promptly went down the field and kicked the game winning field goal.
Now THAT was a dumb idea.

Doesn't it make things more interesting in regulation play if you don't know which team will have the choice in OT? I thought some of the interest was lost when alternating possession arrows were introduced in basketball. Not knowing who was going to win a jump ball was part of the suspense. |

I'm also on team just pay an extra period.
Play an 8 minute quarter. If no winner, play a 2nd 8 minute quarter.
If you still don't have a winner after two 8-minute periods, then go to a 2point shootout (Soccer PK style).
Each team gets 5 attempts, whoever scores the most win. After the first 5 attempts, each round becomes sudden death.

Not you guys, but I'm intrigued that all the people advocating for player safety, and less mandatory off season NFL work, and less hitting in their practices and concussions, and blah blah after this game are now like -"Play them until their is no one left standing!" 😀

I think the players should get an extra 1/4 game check if it goes into overtime.

And I also think some teams would choose to go for two at the end of regulation as well. Makes for interesting TV for sure. But just for fun: I say no coin flip. Visitor gets the choice to start the game. If overtime happens, home team gets the option automatically. |

OT should be an extra 8 minute period in the playoffs I think this is where I land also. Give both teams 3 timeouts. Play an extra period. I think 2 minutes could actually be enough if the teams get 3 timeouts. 4 minutes and 3 to's would probably be about right. Or wait, I got a better idea. Play 4 minutes (or whatever). The team that gets the ball first gets 1 timeout. The other team gets three timeouts. In other words, some compensation for not getting the ball first. |

Go old school and use the penetration rule! So I never coached with that rule. But I do have a question. When that rule was in effect, would teams go for it on 4th down a good bit when on the -45 or so? If so, that does make it interesting. Oh wait, I just realized something. I don't quite know the rule. If you go for it on 4th down on the -45 and don't get it, does the other team get a penetration point (or however they scored it)? Do you get one if you start there is what I am asking. |

The visiting team has the KO option and is first in overtime.
Make field goals score the number of points based upon the kick distance...30-39 yds = 3 points. 40-49 yds = 4 points. 20-29 yds = 2 points etc.
If, on the FG attempt there is a penalty, K either loses possession, or awarded a 1st down.

Just keep playing Football until somebody wins.
The idea that "Coin Toss" determines who wins is a fallacy.
It's what happens AFTER the coin flip that does.
"Sudden Death" went out of favor after kickers became too good, the first team with ball only needed to get into FG range (which is near mid-field now).
Just like the PAT from 15-yard line - kickers get penalized for being too good.

In one of the new spring leagues they had something along the lines of you either choose to take the ball or choose what yard line to start on.
So if I picked the yard line the other team could decide to take the ball or give it up. If you picked to take the ball the other team could pick what yard line you started. It was an interesting idea.

What league was it that had players sprint recover the ball to determine who got the ball. Fun to watch but had some hellacious injuries that put a stop to it.
I’d favor the hs/NCAA overtime procedure to what the nfl does.

If visiting team was going to automatically get ball in OT -
Perhaps the home team (thus "favorite") would "try harder" to win in regulation?
And if they fail - maybe visitors deserved to win-were better?

My fix for that is don't start at the 25. That is absurd on the face of it. Lose 10 yards and you can still kick a FG. They should definitely start at the 40 or 50. Same in high school. I do not like the 10. For two reasons. 1) It is actually hard to score from the 10. I think you would score more from the 15 since you can get a first down. 2) Now the high school team with a bad kicker can even kick a 27 yard FG. I just think you should have to do something to be in scoring range. |

I cannot tell if you are being serious or joking. You are usually on point on everything. But both teams can receive (and usually do 99.9999% of the time) a kickoff to start a half. So - fair. Only one team can in the OT. So, not exactly fair. Could be fair with some modifications. |

I'd be inclined to win the toss, go on offense, take my best shot, and then forfeit.

I think 8 minutes is a bit too short... I say playoffs play an extra quarter. It is the playoffs. NOBODY is complaining about having to play extra football in the playoffs
