First I know there are no easy answers to my questions. We are a program behind the times. We have always depended on getting great atheletes and running the most basic program from top to bottom (nothing wrong with basic). But nowadays we haven't got the same atheletes we used to get. Don't get me wrong we have good kids but our program was never big on weights or off season work. Even if our kids are good atheletes other schools also have good kids PLUS an off season workout, speed and weight training. We also ran a very bland offense, without a lot of options or formations. Not that it's a bad offense but we are very easy to scout and it's not like we have total studs and we can say "go ahead and stop us if you can" they can. Our coaching staff is now in the war room trying to figure out what we need to do to turn this thing around (defense and offense). I want to know which way we should go, (1) keep teaching an offense and defense that doesn't fit our kids or (2) find something that fits the kids we have. Without a doubt we want to add some wrinkles into our predictable offense and get our off season program started., but what and how? I'm probably rambling now but, I just want to get this program turned around.

find out how you can ADD to the bland offense / defense to make it less predictable.
step ONE 1) Get the entire staff to attend one off season coaching Clinic OUTSIDE OF YOUR AREA 2) Encourage the staff to explore other systems 3) See what they learned and see if any of it can apply to your kids
WHAT MAKES YOU SO PREDICTABLE? What (generally speaking) would make you less predictable?

offensively we run only one set. 2 backs 2 split 1 slot.

There are a million directions you could go. I would work on establishing an offseason program first, the kids will see that first. Then I would spend the next couple of months throwing ideas around, type of Off, type of D. Once you reach concensus, find a local college or attend clinics where you can meet people who are experts in that system. You would be amazed how open college coaches are to helping out high school coaches in the spring and summer. We had a great experience at one school. They let us have access to all of their game tapes and cutups, and the O line coach sat down with us and went over any questions we had.

I would change the O and D. Like the other coaches said go to clinics and meet with college coaches. Also try and get some videos and books on the type of O and D you like.

the offense is simple. this would be our play list
22 dive 33 dive 25 kick (off tackle after dive fake) 34 kick (same) 22 reverse to slot(off dive and kick fake) 33 reverse 37 quick toss 26 quick toss two counter plays bootleg pass a couple of dropbacks
Your replies are appreciated. Thanks again guys.

shoot...I think one of the simplest things you can do on offense is just keep the same plays, but out of a lot of stressing formations.
Also, think of the quarterback as just another back (as a blocker or runner)...this way you don't mentally paint yourself into a corner when removing one back from the backfield.
If you can get the defense to get out of their comfort zone in defending you (just forcing them OUT of a coverage is enough), you are swinging momentum on your side.

Your plays build off of the same steps and fakes, it's just a different guy ends up with the ball right? I don't think it's your X's & O's. It's just your Jimmy's and Joe's need to get a bar on their back and LIFT!! And run!

It is easiest to add formations to your offense then plays to your offense. Have your staff join this board and start posting!!!

i guess the first question I have to ask is WHY the off-season program is non-existent? To me that is the first priority over the Xs and Os. What can be done by the staff to reorient the players towards doing what is needed to be successful should be the question.
As brophy said...get your staff on the same page and get to some clinics to get some help or new ideas.

Funny, but we had a tough season this year, and we are talking exactly the OPPOSITE of what you are in terms of our offense and defense. We are talking about dumbing them both down considerably.

I agree with the rest of the posts. You have got to have a good offseason program, if you don't you are just putting yourself further and further behind.
