Hey guys I will be having my first pre season meeting with my team in January. Just finsihed my first year with the program and we did ok but have alot of room for improvement. Just looking for ideas as something "Crazy" or out of the ordinary to get everyones attention and perhaps everyone involved so they know they are a part of the team and also know they just arent along for the ride. Any ideas would be appreciated.

What's the format of your meeting? Is it "stand and deliver" from you? Is there interaction? Do you have captains who can help?
Pick a couple of goals - not too many And make sure your goals are backed up by what takes place in the meeting. AND (most important) that there is follow through with anything that is covered. Otherwise, you held a meeting and no more.
In my state, we only get one meeting with our players prior to our season so ours are very informational (boring) but we also try to do something to send the kids a SIMPLE message. We explain to our kids how we evaluate them beyond their playing. We use 3 questions. 1. Can we trust you? 2. Are you committed to excellence? 3. Do you care about others?
We refer to these as the "3Q's" often.
We tell the kids that each player will be discussed by the staff and we will have meaningful conversations with any player who we cannot answer "YES" for all three questions.
Our goal? To get our kids looking at themselves the same way that we coaches do. This is the basic starting point for us. How do we feel about you and how do you see yourself.
Makes for great conversation and forces our players to reflect and look inwards.
95% of our guys are Triple YES guys. The other 5% are those we hold meaningful conversations with (position coaches and/or HC). Some will come to our way of thinking (based on the 3Qs) or they will struggle or quit.
It's nothing crazy or attention getting. It's about forming a solid base of understanding. Coaching is much easier when this is addressed.

The key is - WHAT do you want to accomplish? WHY are you having a meeting? If you want to get them excited about the off season then you need to come in excited about the off season. Communicate your goal - hopefully the captains or leaders of the team are already on board with you. The Lou Holtz 3 questions are good, but with this being your first year you need to make sure "they" trust you!

I was an assistant on staff for 10 years and I just finished my first year as head coach so they know and trust me a lot. I basically want to get them excited about football and really try to pull in the kids that didnt play this year but always "think about it" Just somethign so they know we are expecting big things from them this year.

how far have you come thus far? how far do you seriously have to go?
might create a cool looking banner that reads "TIM HIGH SCHOOL -- 2008 CONFERENCE CHAMPS" ... or " STATE CHAMPS". and, i don't mean something cheesy .. i mean a really nice looking poster or banner that is directly to the point... slogan it up but put the "goal" on their... i.e. we WILL be conference champs next year with some catchy slogan that ties 07 to 08 -- such as "Finish" (maybe because you fell short last year a couple of times). or T.O.T.A.L. - Taking Ourselves To Another Level ... (because you feel they have "settled" for moral victories or lesser goals).
it can't be something unrealistic, though or they won't buy it. i mean, don't put STATE CHAMPS if you're coming off a 1-9 season and lost a bunch of kids and the jv was only .500. be realistic yet still set the bar high. maybe a "timeline" of trophies ... 08-conference champs, 09-region champs, 10-state champs to really focus on the current freshmen but show how important building the foundation (tradition) is squarely on the shoulders of the juniors & soph's.
