I put togther a prototype for a QB training simulator using Powerpoint. This sample is to train the QB to make a presnap read, then choose the correct receiver while the play is run. It's very basic(only 4 slides), but could be a comprehensive training manual for teaching many of the mental aspects of playing QB. Let me know if you think it's worth continuing. Thanks, Mav www.savefile.com/files/9743505ps - be sure to 'Save' the file to your computer, then 'Open' it.

Love it, can we add more plays?

This is great. Just tell us how to add plays and our QBs will be picking the defenses apart.
Thanks

Coach,
This is a great tool that you have created. I am playing with Microsoft PowerPoint to see if I can recreate your hitch play and try to create some others but it is not that easy. Using that animation toolbar is not easy at all and takes alot of practice from what it seems. Well anyways, I am writing this because I would like to know if you could share in detail what you did to create such a great QB tool. Thank you.
Sincerely, Coach D

I think you'd be better off using my file as a template until you get more comfortable.
Open Powerpoint first, then within PP open the .pps file. If you just double click on the file it'll launch the presentation. Once you have it open, go to the 'Slide Show' pulldown on the top bar and click 'Custom Animation'. This will display the animation pane on the right. Each object that is animated (text, players, etc) will have an entry in the animation pane. If you click on it you'll see the details. Start playing around with it a bit, then let me know when you have questions.
btw- An important point for adjusting the motion paths is to right click when you have a path selected, then choose 'Edit Points', this will allow you to alter the players path.

Coach,
Thank you. I have it working and I will continue to try to play around with this thing. This is a great idea and awesome execution on the play diagram (definitely a football word, execution, lol). But thanks again for sharing this. I use Word for my playbooks (I like word rather than PowerPoint for playbooks), but I can definitely find some use for this animation playbook. Thanks again.
Sincerely, Coach D

I too was a long time Word guy for playbooks, but after getting the such a positive reation from the players this off-season, I'm sold on Powerpoint. They never went through the paper playbooks with such enthusiasm. Kids today really do seem to be visual learners. I just ported over my static Word docs to PP and added animation. If you haven't seen it, here's the Quick passing intro we gave to the players recently -- www.savefile.com/files/4159664 ps - be sure to download it to your computer before opening it.

I do this also, its awesome. I use a "football" and animate the football, it goes to the receiver. We do the animation with runs as well, its fun and a great visual tool.

We 1st did it with the 'football' but always having to adjust the 'rotation' of the ball to make it look right was a pain. The arrow/line with a slow fade does seems to empahsize the balls path. Do you have any tips on how you do it with the football? I've really only used PP for a couple of months -- seem to find something new every time I play with it. The other things I'd like to do is 1) be able to rotate or turn a player. This would be better for demonstrating where a player is 'looking'. 2) have a 'master timing' adjustment - keep all of the relative timings the same but be able to show in a kind of 'slow motion' or freeze the play at different points.

Coach,
I have downloaded your other playbook before from the playbook forum. But I have officially run it some problems with the plays. I have created the plays, animations, etc. but I can not get the messages to pop up when the wrong choice has been selected or when the right choice has been selected on the play (ie. interception, good complete pass, etc.). Even after downloading your original play nothing came up for the hitch, it just ended without saying interception, completion, etc. I guess I just don't know what to do to make the messages pop up.
Sincerely, Coach D

Sincerely, Coach D Coach D, To get the 'QB feedback', you have to click on the '#' below the receiver you're throwing to. This only works in the QB simulator, not the playbook. If you're asking how does PP do this... What makes the text boxes pop up(ie animate) is a feature called 'triggers'. They're not used in the regular playbook, only in the QB sims powerpoint. To get to the trigger feature, highlight the animation/text box (you want to pop up) in the Custom animation pane on the right. Then click its small pulldown arrow on the right side and choose 'Timing...'. Whne that window appears you'll see the 'trigger' option. Click it. Choose 'Start effect on click of' There you define what 'triggers' or makes the text box animate/pop up. For the sample it's the click of the '#' box below the receiver. Hope this help. It's a bit confusing but after you do a couple it makes more sense. Let me know. Mav

Mav,
GREAT JOB!!! Definitely a solid visual learning tool for the kids. I started to toy with PP. I never knew the amount of things you could do on it. Just starting to try the animation stuff. I can't seem to get the timing down on plays.... I'll continue to toy with it.... Thx again...

Mav, you can adjust the timing of the ball and the individual guys to match up, also, you can use the "on click, with previous, after previous" (after previous) to have the ball throw after thr routes have been run. With run game, I've just played with putting the animation path of the ball on the same route as the ball carrier and adjusting their speeds. It gets tricky with option where qb carries then pitches but it can be done after a few tries. As far as "eyes", you can animate an "arrow pointer" and/or text box to appear at a given time to indicate the thought process the qb should be going through. I'm no expert with it but am getting better the more that I play with it, its worth it though to be able to use a step by step visual tool to teach instead of drawing 30 "slides" on a grease board for progressions. Thats the nice thing with copy/pasting the slides is that you can just progressively adjust for each slide to keep it moving in sequence.

Thats the nice thing with copy/pasting the slides is that you can just progressively adjust for each slide to keep it moving in sequence. The issue I'vd had with using a ball is you have to have 3 separate animations of the ball to make it look correct. I've tried it with only one animation, but the QB drop has to be much slower than the actual thrown ball. First the ball must be facing straight ahead and drop back with the motion of the QB and use the option to make it disappear after animation. Then the second ball animation is to make it reappear with the correct rotation angled at the receiver to make it look like a spiral. Then the final ball animation is to move it to the receiver. It can be done but it may be more of a hassle then it's worth. Here's a play that has it with a dotted line and the same play using an animated football. I'd be interested if folks think the ball looks better than the dotted line. If the extra step of getting the ball rotated correctly is worth it, I may go that way in the future. www.savefile.com/files/2846006

What I'm referring to is having the abilty to 'turn' or rotate an object during the animation, such as a defender to make it look like he's turned his shoulders to run to the flat.

Mav,
It's coming along. I have some little problems but I won't worry about that until I finished everything I want to do. I am basically coping and pasting the slides and changing them the way I need fit. It is working out well. I will probably need your expertise when I try to polish it. But thank you again for the help.
Sincerely, Coach D
