My school experienced a lot of problems with head sets over the past couple of seasons, and we are looking into something new. I am looking for comments on good and bad experiences with different brands and types of head sets if anyone can share them. Thanks!

We have used porta phones for 4 seasons and have not had any problems with them. They are just the push to talk type with a cord.

I dislike Porta Phones, too. That is what we have now. They are so hard to hear. I feel like there is no good setting. Always too loud or too quiet.
Really, I have grown to a point where I no longer even want to wear one. There are a few things that they really help with, but for the most part they just annoy me. When I call plays, I always pull the headset off, because I can never hear the player or myself. I also don't want to listen to people talking while I am trying to talk. I would really prefer to have a coach who would just report to me what the guys upstairs are saying. I probably spent 50% of the time without the stupid things on.

huey, I have been using PortaPhones for several years and have had some problems with them, but nothing that I considered out of the ordinary (i.e. do to use/misuse, etc.)
Can you tell me from your experience why or how Telex or coachcomm. are better, in case I'm in the market in the near future?

Mine (portaphones) seem to break easily when thrown to the ground with great velocity

We use Portaphones also -- can't stand them!! They're always something going wrong with them. Going in and out, static, volume not working, etc. We pay every off season to have them reconditioned. It helps for a week or 2 and then the troubles begin again. It severely hampered our communications during games. We too just shut them off during a couple of games.

What is the best website to look for headsets? Is there one website that I can compare all different brands or do I need to go each individual site? We have been using Portaphones and they are not very good. We do not have a big budget but need something better than these headsets. Thanks

We have been using Porta-Phone and experienced the same problems listed by everyone else. Brophy, you mentioned using motorola. Do they have a coaching head set, or are you using cell phones. I know some teams have decided to use their cell phones and just have an open ended phone call throughout the game.

We had Porta Crap for years, all the same problems listed above. We sent them in every year and every year they broke, or were nothing but static. This season we went to Coach Comm the 3rd game and the difference is unbelieveable. You can hear everything like your standing next to the guy and we never had a single problem. They cost more, $3,000 but they are worth every penny.

I hate any push to talk system.. I have had no problems with porta phones, but I have heard of some issues with them from other schools.
Just curious, where does one look to find motorola head sets?

we have porta phones, and they have worked well for us (if we remember to charge them before the game). LOL only minor issue we have had is the swivel in the mics have broken and we have had to use our ingenuity to fix them until reconditioning time

Porta Phones for us. Have had the same set for 6 years - reconditioning does not seem bad for what we get. Like knighter said, you've got to make sure they are charged!

I was wondering if anyone has used Telex before. I was looking through an ad in one my football magazine and came across this brand. They are bit more pricey than Portaphone but I was wondering if they are well worth that extra bit of money?

we had reconditioned our PortaPhones EVERY year and the last two years we had to have them reconditioned (again) DURING the season.
We did everything possible to get them to work (charge them from the end of the game until the begining of the next game - didn't let freshmen use it - limited Soph games from using it - setting up exactly like the bomb-squad-instructions - conduct blood goat sacrifices - leave on during half-time - pointing antenaes towards goal posts - use two coaches to set the phones up - ....everything!). Phones would ALWAYS crap out consistently after the fourth game of the season. Static, cut-in-and-out, bad reception, etc.
Our best luck was using security two-way radios and just chatting back and forth (used loaned motorola phones once....great)

Thanks. Don't know if we'll be buying new ones before I ride off into the sunset (11 more report cards to go!) but the testimonials are good to know.

We have the PortaPhone STX digicom headsets, and I can't say that we have had any major problems with them. We actually like them quite a bit.
Anything that is push to talk sucks!

We have Sucka-phones (portaphones). Both schools I have had them at had bad luck. At my previous school we got them and they worked great except we starting having problems with the mic on one set. If it got bumped even a little it shut down.
Now at my current school. OMG. We had so many issues this year. We had 4-5 games where they stopped working for all or a large portion of the game. They are a few years old. I hope we look into something new.

I have used portaphones at 4 different schools now. I have never had a problem with any of the headsets. I actually like them so much that when I got my 1st head coaching job I switched from coach comm and bought portaphones.

We used motorola phones on JVs. I just bought some cheap little headsets at Target to plug into the phones. They ended up working better than the varsity headsets.

I will have to say that Port-a-Phones have to be the worse. Everywhere I've been that has use them we have had problems. Even fully charged! This year I got the HC to buy Coach Comm and they were great, didn't have any problems and are easy to set up and you can turn them off at half time without worry. We had a headset break and they overnight shipped us a new one.

We have Portaphone WIRED sets.
Portaphone WIRELESS went out 3 times in 2 seasons while I was a coordinator, had to come down out of the box each time.
WIRED sets cost about $1000 less, and are 100% reliable (so far). Pain in the tail to set up and break down, gotta find "Cable Guys" and occasionally you nearly choke yourself to death, but compared to the problem of losing your communication mid-game, it's worth the trouble.

We all kinds of problems with our porta phones. They would always cut out during the game. One time we noticed the phone cut out when the radio guy turned on his stuff for the pre-game show.
He was using a antenna for his broadcast. We asked him about this and he said he could use a phone or his cell phone to get it back to the station.
Since then no problems.
