what do you guys think?
Having some time on Sunday afternoon at CFT HQs, we decided to dial up a few of our NFL front office friends and ask them the following question: Which college coach today would you hire as a NFL head coach?
First choice from all 3: Kirk Ferentz of Iowa. Ferentz, who is 38-12 the last four seasons at Iowa, recently signed a new contract worth a guaranteed $2.7 million annually, placing him third nationally in per season pay behind Notre Dame’s Charlie Weis ($3.3 million) and Southern California’s Pete Carroll ($3 million).
Per one source: "You can tell he coached under Belichick ... organized, thorough and all business. (Ferentz was the O-Line coach for The Sweatshirt One at Cleveland from 1993-1995). He probably could have had the Miami, Houston or Atlanta jobs if he wanted them."
Another source added: "No way he finishes out the Iowa gig ... the NFL will throw a lot of dough at him and he'll go. If Cowher leaves Pittsburgh, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the Steeler job." Ferentz played high school football in Pittsburgh and was an assistant coach at Pitt.
Other comments from our NFL sources regarding some present college coaches who might have a NFL head coaching future:
Pete Carroll (USC): "he'll get another shot if he wants it" ... "(but) the gig he has now is almost too good to walk from."
Charlie Weiss (Notre Dame): "forget all that crap about him wanting to be there forever, he wants back in the NFL" ... "it's only a matter of time."
Urban Meyer (Florida): "too offensive minded to be a NFL head coach" ... "will always be seen as more of a coordinator than a head guy."
Bobby Petrino (Louisville): "heard he had the Raiders gig if he wanted it" ... "Louisville is throwing a lot of money at him but he'll be in the big leagues within the next three years as a head guy."
Larry Coker: "I'd hire him as an offensive coordinator (he served that capacity under Butch Davis at Miami) but that's all" ... "if he can't keep college kids in line the pros will eat him alive."
