What is your definition of recruiting?
I've been reading a few posts about a few high level H.S. programs on this board and more than a few times "oh, program X, they recruit." A person making the claim would explain his points and then someone else would disagree and tell why. I found myself completely understanding the points of both sides.
Personally, I think any time you are promoting your program, at some level, you are recruiting. Wearing your hat, speaking at a clinic, doing a camp, parent meetings, team dinners, practice, etc. What is wrong with these things?
If you see a kid at a camp and mention to someone, "boy I would love to have him on our team someday," is that illegal recruiting?
If a family asks to speak to you as a coach and you tell them there are finanical aid opportunities for those in need (private schools), is that illegal recruiting?
There are a ton of "what if" type situations that can be listed here. Just curious how everyone thinks is recruiting and what isn't.

I would imagine that each state association has very specific criteria that is used to determine whether or not a student has been "recruited" illegally by a coach or official representative of the school.
Generally speaking (at least in Illinois), the wearing of coats, hats, shirts, etc, etc is NOT considered "iilegal" recruiting. However, actions like promoting a specific sports program to junior high kids or contacting kids in other schools and encouraging them to transfer to your school to play sports IS considered "illegal" recruiting. If a family (usually a dad) contacts the football coaches and wants to talk about their kid transferring, the best thing for the coach to do is to have the parent contact the school office and then report the conversation to the principal.
The best thing to do is contact your state high school athletic association and find out exactly what is and isn't considered "illegal" recruiting.

If one of my kids seeks to talk to you about going to your school, so be it. But if you seek to talk to my kid about coming to your school, thats both illegal and unethical.
