Ok, Lets say you are the school superintendent... this should be interesting...
1) Does a coach have the responsibility to entertain the parents, boosters and administration?
2) What if a coach has systems in place that are very entertaining but the team loses alot of high scoring games for example?
3) what if the team wins alot of close games and makes the playoffs consistently but is viewed as conservative, unimaginative, dull etc...?
4) what if the coach runs an "out dated" system (ie dw or sw or straight T) and leads the league in scoring and makes the playoffs but the boosters think its dull...they want to see the ball in the air...what do you do?

1) No. 2) Fire him. 3) I would be lucky to have him. 4) Give him a raise.

1) No 2) Depends on the talent he has. If they are scoring a lot without good talent, then he is probably doing a good job. If he is working with exceptional talent and losing shoot-outs then get rid of him. 3) Same as above. It all depends on the kids you are working with 4) Forget them and win. Who cares what you are running.

1) fans are entertained when you are in the playoffs, contending for state titles. That's all they care about. You can win all the games you want, but if it doen't mean anything, they won't invest in caring.
Winning cures everything.

1) Does a coach have the responsibility to entertain the parents, boosters and administration? What do you mean by "entertain"? I feel that a consistently winning football team is very entertaining. 2) What if a coach has systems in place that are very entertaining but the team loses alot of high scoring games for example? Again, maybe I'm not understanding the question correctly, but I don't think that a team that consistently loses is "entertaining", regardless of how many bells and whistles or smoke and mirrors are utilized. If a team is giving up more points then they are scoring on a consistent basis, there is a problem. 3) what if the team wins alot of close games and makes the playoffs consistently but is viewed as conservative, unimaginative, dull etc...? In my experience, this does not happen. At least in my neck of the woods, what matters is winning. Coaches who put a good product on the field, win games consistently, and get to the playoffs are seldom, if ever, criticized, for playcalling provided that the team wins the game. Now, with that being said, there are always going to be loudmouths out there who talk just to hear the sound of their own voice. Back in '01, we threw the heck out of the ball. We threw it sideways, backwards, forwards, underhanded, overhanded. We sometimes threw the ball to a guy and then that guy threw the ball to someone else. We threw the ball when it was dry, when it was raining, all the time, throw, throw throw. Point is, we threw the ball probably 40+ times a game. And we were very good at it. Had stud kids who loved playing in that kind of offense and ate it up. Went 9-0 in a tough conference. Averaged over 40 points a game. Had an all-State QB who ended the season with almost 2500 yards passing. With all that success, there was STILL clowns up in the stands yelling, "run the ball, Coach!" 4) what if the coach runs an "out dated" system (ie dw or sw or straight T) and leads the league in scoring and makes the playoffs but the boosters think its dull...they want to see the ball in the air...what do you do? In that case, the boosters are idiots...what is the problem? The team is winning games and scoring a lot of points along the way? Obviously, the coach has a system that he is comfortable with and, more importantly, the kids understand and execute it. Why would anyone in their right mind want to screw up a good thing?

We have a similar situation as wildcat. Last season we averaged 6 passes a game! Every game fans would start yelling at us to run the ball because we were passing to much. Amazing.

Reminds me of when Mouse Davis (Run and Shoot Guru) was the OC for the Detroit Lions who, at the time, had a young Barry Sanders. Davis would point out how many passing yards, receptions, etc HIS offense was producing and yet the Lions were not winning! I'm sure there were other reasons but my point is that the most entertainment that can come out of a football game is winning. As the famous coach once said, "Statistics (and I guess this means your entertainment factor) are for LOSERS! Win the game and they will be entertained!

The reality is that as a coach you have a boss (school super/AD/principal/boosters/etc), but you also have a duty to your kids. The duty dictates that you develop them as men and give them the best chance to win, regardless of how flashy your system is. Unfortunately, decisions tend to come from the top down.
The trick is to find a situation that gives you that freedom, and often winning consistently is the only way to get it. That said, if the super/boosters tell you to be more entertaining, and you are not, you probably shouldn't be fired, but don't be surprised if you are at the first hint of struggling. I don't condone this, but that's life.

Look deeper than scores. Wins matter, not how you get them, but the result. Whether you throw the ball 50 times a game or 5, if you win, thats all that matters. Beyond winning though what matters is the quality of the kids outside of football. You can win all you want but if you are producing thugs, it doesn't matter. If the coach is producing quality young men, then he is doing his job.
