Well said everyone, I think you guys are right on with treating the duds and studs the same because when it comes down it it the stud is a dud when he does his own thing, he has to be a stud all the time not just when its convinent

Coach:
You said it with a nice rhyme there at the end. In my book, when it comes to results, there's no difference between a "won't" and a "can't" -- a kid who won't do something is no better than a kid who can't do it, and they're a lot worse for the attitude and morale of the team/program. I would suggest playing good cop/bad cop with them. In the group meeting, play good cop. Show them an inspirational video clip about leadership, teamwork, and hard work -- I'd suggest the following from "Gladiator:" Maximus' first time fighting in the Coliseum; re-creation of the Battle of Carthage; gladiators facing chariots; Maximus takes charge, tells the others they will die if they fight individually; gladiators huddle together in middle with shields and ultimately defeat the charioteers; one gladiator tries to fight on his own and Maximus has to go rescue him -- and deliver a message along the lines of what "mwpilots" lines out above. Then, meet with each of the group individually, and play bad cop -- drop the hammer and lay the hardline on them. Basically it's a divide and conquer strategy. If you go too hardline with the group, they may draw comfort from the numbers and band together to resist you. Talk to them separately where you can clarify the consequences for each of them personally, and you may be likely to get individuals to shape up and buy in. I'd also suggest checking out Bruce Brown's booklets "First Steps to Building Successful Teams - Core Covenants" and "Captains: 7 Ways to Lead Your Team."

Coach it sounds like you wrote it for me. I am in the middle of are spring weights we call PRIDE. Its a points system a lot like the other coaches posted. The PRIDE system will end at the end of two a days the winning team will receive a letter mens jacket, home jersey and also a sweat suit, 2nd and 3rd receive prises also. I have key kids not showing up there not going to play. The last place team will have to carry the dummies to the field, etc. I plan on doing parent completion also. Dads -vs- players paint ball wars so on. In order to play you have to of made all the lifts that week. If you would like my points system I use PM me and I will send to you.
