I am going to a 3A high school in Kansas - about 270 students in grades 9-12. An interesting side note...the current 4th grade class has 65 students and 51 of them are boys! They will field two full little league teams (22 players per team) for 5th grade next fall! That is exciting.

approximately 185 kids 9-12
incoming freshmen class is 37 kids, only 7 boys. nice odds if you are guy looking for a date, but not real good if your a coach loooking for a football team. out of the 7 boys, only 3 will play football, and only 1 has a legit shot to be a player before it is all said and done.

1,702. Class A (biggest) in Michigan. Last year we were Division II (second highest) in the playoffs.
We usually have 45-50 on varsity, 30-35 JVs (sophomores), and 35-40 freshmen.

72 students (9-12)
31 boys 26 play football.
JH has 17 boys, 15 play football:
2005 Records JH Team: 1-3 JV team: 1-3 (may have been better if we didn't have to pull up 5 guys after first game, which was a win) varsity: 8-2.
We generally play a class or two up in lower levels, due to travel.
Best JH team we have had in 18 years is 2-2. Best JV team we have had in 18 years is 3-2. Worst Varsity team in 18 years is 6-4. We are tiny... but it is a lot of fun coaching here. In those past 18 years, we've had:
3 Division 1 players 21 Division II/NAIA Players 1 currently in the NFL, 1 in NIFL.

Not sure this belongs in this thread but somebody may find it interesting:
A friend of mine was very successful for 12 years at a small (350 students) school. He then got his "dream job" at a big (1400) school in the city where he lived. He had immediate success there but then was up and down until he retired.
He told me near the end of his career that "Everybody always wants the 'big, name' job. But sometimes I think the best jobs are in the small communities where the whole town is involved and turns out on Friday nights."

blb,
I am at my 8th year at my current school (enrollment 72). I have been back here for 4 years- in between the first and last 4 years here, I was a HC at a school of around 2200 for six years... we had reasonable success there (4 league titles, 2 runner up... usually early exit from playoffs), but when things worked out to come back here, I jumped at the chance and have never looked back and never regretted it once.

Bluto,
The smallest school I have coached at was 630. My current school is 1700.
In the back of my mind I think when I retire from teaching it would be great (assuming I still feel like coaching) to get a job on a coaching-only basis in a small-town school.

To me 250-700 seems an ideal size (probably because I've been in larger or smaller than that, so for me, it is still an "ideal"). I'll admit, we are a bit tiny here... There were some good things and bad things in the big school- just like there are here... I guess they are kind of opposites- what is good here was bad there and vice-versa. One bad thing about this level is depth for practice. In my first year back here we had 16 out (2 were 95 lb. freshmen), 2 out for the season with injuries before the first game. It is hard to get any quality team reps going against 3 guys, coaches and managers holding bags and air. I remember thinking "man- last year we had 3 full scout team offenses against our Defense- now, we've got three guys".
