Would you rather spend the money to go to a clinic to hear two of your favorite coaches who you base your offense or defense on OR would you rather take the money and buy their new books and/or DVD?

No question, a clinic. A visit would be better but you can't ask a tape questions.

I would go with the dvd set..UNLESS it is simply a video of their clinic presentation.
The book/dvd set is usually a comprehensive and indepth discussion on their offense, instillation, practice methods....
A clinic is gonna hit on some of the high points of book/lecture.

DVD I can watch it over and over again and share it with my coaches. Much better than Im going to do taking notes and then trying to explain it to coaches.

My first clinic was the National Wing-T Clinic in 2007. I didn't have any videos. After listening to the speakers, I sought out their videos. Gerry Gallagher was a fantastic speaker, and I watched him cover running back practice routines, from stance to drills to practice organization. In my notes, I wrote, "Find his videos." After watching Denny Creehan, who I'd never frickin' heard of, I decided to see if he had any videos. He has a few... My point is that the clinic energized me like never before, but I really needed to go back and hear it from the speakers again and again (video). While I love the live clinic, I'd choose DVD. Of course, my post tells you I'd choose both.

trojan, if you run the wing-t (I assume you do since you attended the National Clinic), how had you not heard of Denny Creehan?

Seriously though, I just based what little I'd learned on the head coach and our playbook. No idea where this Wing-T thing came from. I made it my goal to get a clue, and now Coach Creehan is my hero.

DVDs are fine if you know exactly what you're looking for. You get exposed to a lot more ideas at clinics.

Clinics:
A have learned a lot from good presenters at clinics and once in a while you do get stuck with a guy who is not really very good, but overall the guys are worthwhile.
DVD's: I have also learned a lot from DVD teachings, and like to watch those and pick up clues for various schemes to use, etc.
Depends upon what you are trying to implement and where you look to find it.

DVDs for me. I have never been able to take notes. As I am writing stuff down as fast as I can I miss what the speaker is saying. Even now I am in College and I NEVER take notes. Most of the time I think the professor thinks I am just zoning out. I tried to take notes this past weekend at a Glazier clinic and I have NO CLUE what I wrote or what the speaker was saying. DVDs I can watch over and over pause rewind and take notes at my own pace. I still love the clinics, but if I had to choose it would be DVD.
If anyone has any good note taking advice for me please let me know because I would like to take notes, but I just cant do it.

i would go visit with a hs staff for free If they are 5 states away, it becomes a bit pricier than a few DVDs and then of course the time is money issue as well

Most of us dont live there and the 6 years I lived and worked in Texas traveling the entire state on business etc. lots of distance/overnight travel to cover. But I guess if you live the D/FW like I did, lots of local HS programs to choose from.

I think videos are becoming worse and worse. More money, less info.
I say clinic.

I use the DVD's as a reference for more questions....(but remember that most people on this site trade/borrow each other's dvd's so it is less costly than before) So lets say I bought the new Herb Hand outside zone video (which is a rip off of the WVU outside zone video) but I notice somethings that I want to be elaborated on So then I check the clinic schedule to see if he is speaking anywhere and if so I make it a point to attend and hopefully get my questions answered (also maybe I thought about attending the clinic with a certain coach speaking and I get his dvd and realize that I don't match philosophy....I don't waste the money to go see him or in terms of glazier I go to a different speaker during that time slot)
Now overall clinics are better but are not year round ....and professional growth needs to be year round in order to keep your mind sharp IMO
So use both together to get the most out of it
Now the best thing I think I do for myself personally 1. ESPN Gameplan College 2. Record every game I can that matches my O style (dvr) 3. Go through each game (skipping opponents offense if they are not my O style) cut out all plays that are new thoughts or schemes we run.(dvd recorder) 4. At the end of the college season go back and look over all the cutups I have made and write down questions about techniques/thoughts/formations/gadgets etc. 5. Try to find DVD's from such and such college dealing with their offense. 6. Watch look to see if ?'s are answered if so add to playbook 7. If not find them on clinic schedule or go visit
Case in point: Watched every WVU game three years ago (time might be off a year) Looked at every technique of their outside zone and noticed against Pitt they ran OZ but folded the guard around onto LB Thought it was great idea and looked the exact same as OZ but RB was hitting it up in frontside A gap So got a hold of WVU oustide zone DVD to look for info on that wrinkle No answer So drove to WVU for their coaches clinic and found out that the play was actually their "trap play" question answered ...but i felt I expanded my knowledge in many different ways to get the answer I wanted and I used every resource I could

Interactive situations are the best. To me a visit to a HS coach or a college coach is the best place to learn football. After that a SMALL clinic is good. That gives you a chance to talk to the presenters with any questions. Button-holing recruiters is good, too.
As I said earlier, DVDs are fine if you know what you're looking for. When I was younger, though, I learned a lot of basic football from the "All-star" clinics.
