The one characteristic I really like them to have is initiative.
One of my college coaches said, "If you see a broken fence...you fix it."

Knowledge of their position... AND how that position fits into OUR scheme.... there are 100 ways to play corner... how do we need to play it to maximize our scheme.
Also I think they need to be a drill hound... all kinds of drills that help techniques that support the overall scheme.

Relating to the players well, it is your group, make the players want to be in it, help them embrace that role (whatever it might be), reward or at least acknowledge their successes (especially if it is something the specifically changed for the better) they will play harder for you. All of this is in addition to a mindset of continual learning and a base understanding of the position, but the base knowledge isn't as important as the ability to get the players to understand it, I can list 100 drills for a coach to use but if none of them make them better players it doesn't matter, I'd rather have 5 drills that carry over to game situations and the players getting better at those skills, in my opinion. Once the coach understands the concepts, they can take off with their group and that is when the group gets really good, ownership of the goal.

Make the players better players, and for them it has to be tangible. Drills, video, whatever. Anything else is wasting time.

Know the technique and how to teach it Know the scheme and how to teach it Trust the chain of command but don't be afraid to make a point in a meeting if something is not addressed During games, be a leader by example (don't yell at refs, when appropriate you can ask a question or raise a concern about something but always be respectful) Gain the trust of the kids and have them enjoy the position group you coach Watch more film on yourself than the opponent. Correct the group's mistakes and realize what you need to work on in Indy or what ever period you get to work with your guys.

Coaches, What are the characteristics of a good position coach? 1. Goal is to out-practice opponents. 2. You must get your position to believe that YOU ARE THE BEST COACH & TEACHER IN THE LEAGUE. 3. Be a great teacher. 4. Have a philosophy & SELL it to the players. 5. Utilize teaching aids. 6. Great enthusiasm (NOT cheer-leading). 3/1 theory (3 positives for every 1 negative). 7. MUST be consistent. 8. Coach every play. 9. Control the hitting (Tag-off, live tag-off, thud, live). 10. REMEMBER: The best coaches in the country take their players performance personal. NOTE: There is a detailed explanation to each of these but I don't have time to include it here.
