We use transparencies for our Scout Team offense. We print two formations and the defense against them. So when we draw in the plays we actually have 4 plays. We put the transparencies in the plastic sleeves so that we don't have to punch holes in the transparencies. We then put blank pieces of paper between each sheets so their is a white background no matter which side you are looking at. We also communicate with the coaches by calling out a number and top or bottom to designate which page we are running from. Each coach has a list with the page and top or bottom and what play would be run in which direction.

You want to hear about something sickening. I hear that some teams actually show their scout team players the opponents plays on PSPs!!!!! Yes, Playstation portables. Showing the players the exact play in the huddle!!! Genious. In fact, at Tulsa University each player is given a PSP for the players to watch scout film of their opponent.
With DSV, you can upload your video to video IPods or PSPs. DSV, you can make the play cards for us "normal" coaches. LOL

Running the scout team offense ROCKS!!! [sarcasm] I love coming out and running shotgun 5 wide when we are playing a team that runs wing-t....because our defense has to be prepared FOR ANYTHING!! Especially when I know what defense we are going to be running! [/sarcasm]
** seriously, though....(house- thanks for the PSP / DSV heads up...I love that) how hard is it to line up in a formation and run a freaking play? How much easier can we make it?

One time we had a play drawn up on cards and as I was showing it to the kids the center of all people asks if it was a run or a pass. There were no blocking assignments drawn, only pass routes and the kicker was at the top of the card in big bold letters was the word "PASS." Needless to say, the kid wasn't the brightest bulb.

I know of a staff that has several laptops with film loaded into them and with animated plays in Powerpoint that they take on the field.

I know of a staff that has several laptops with film loaded into them and with animated plays in Powerpoint that they take on the field. does that help, though? I'm just asking....I am trying to see this from a player's perspective. I can see the kids now WATCHING FOOTBALL rather than watching what they are supposed to be doing and us watching video more than reading a card. I think technology is great and would love to do this. I just am having difficulty grasping the benefit. As a coach, I think it's brilliant, but getting kids to watch the video, then know their responsibility from the film?

try - as much as possible - to name plays in your system's terminology so that players have a better chance of executing the play more on instinct (what's been taught) rather than on guess work (what am i doing?). tell them things like -- "Johnny, block this like 26 GT. But, Paul, you run 24 Draw" or whatever to help in cutting down on the tentativeness (is that a word? )

Dang, I didn't know DSV would print out the scout cards. I just have a power point file with all the formations we face. I have about 30 Slides on it. I move the defense around print the card and draw the lines. Beats the days of having to use the stencil.
As the DC I name the plays in the same terminology as our offense. If our playaction pass is 400 series then I name it 424 for the playaction zone pass. Just like Huey said it cuts down on confusion and it basically is giving your #2 and #3 offense more reps in practice.

we print out scout play cards from powerpoint also.. on all run plays the circle carrying the ball is in color (or is colored in black) my senior qb asks me this year... so who do I hand the ball off to?? he has never caught on that the ball carrier was colored in after 4 years.....

I love scout team O so much fun. Its the best when its raining out and all the cards start to melt together great fun! We have a guy coaching with us who played for the HC back when he was starting out as an asst. Our qb coach, who played for the HC, runs the scout team now. He told us one day how they use to ask questions in the scout huddle to get our HC all fired up and see him start freaking out. It's great paybacks now for our HC to watch his former player run the scout team and nearly have a stroke before/during/and after each play. So don't always be sure that your scout team dosent get it.....maybe they are messin with your mind LOL

I love preparing for option teams. Nothing better than the scout QB pitching before the dive fake because he doesn't want to get breathed on by the end crashing down.

Yeah I know that feeling knight. Thats why when we face an option team we do a full speed option period without the ball so everyone has to tackle their assignmnet, that way we avoid the great option look from the scout team. The scout team Qb loves when we do option period

Brophy, I don't know how much they use them or in what capacity, just that they do use them. I imagine it would be nice to bounce to and from the film session to the practice field when trying to explain something to an individual or small group, but I think it would be a PIA to try to run a scout team from it "coach, can you replay, etc" . For scout teams, mostly we just use good old vanilla folders and a black sharpie, sometimes I'll use Powerpoint though.
