Last week was a big game for us and we got beaten handily. In the 4th quarter two of our better players did not accept feedback, beaking coaches, questioning play calls, swore, and got into heated exchanges with their coaches on the sideline in front of all their teammates.
Two different issues with these players that have been happening all year. - Player 1 practices well during the week, but plays with too much of an edge and is borderline psychotic on gamedays. He's been kicked out of 2 games last season, this season no ejections but constantly gets personal fouls. - Player 2 is a bit of an outcast/loner and is selfish, doesn't practice well during the week but during games has been good for the most part.
Fortunately we are in the playoffs and can re-write the ship, but these two seems like kids you can't win with and can't win without. Just wondering how you all would handle these two kids.

Well player 2 wouldn't see the field if he doesn't practice well. The kids that perform the best in practice are the ones that get in the game. I'm not sure how important this guy is or how awful his backup is so it's all relative, but I put my best five OL out on the field and the way I evaluate that is through practice. I'll watch practice film with them a bit in the beginning of the year to let them see what I see too.
We had a lot of "player 1" types on our JV team this year. We kicked one off the team, suspended 3-4 others for various lengths of time. They would cop attitude with myself and other varsity games when we'd try to coach them up during JV games, always blame someone else when things go wrong. I'm not really looking forward to these kids coming up to varsity to be honest. They're all outstanding athletes but they have {censored} selfish attitudes and routinely put their team at a disadvantage through undisciplined penalties.
I would have been in favor of kicking more than one of them off the team or suspended them for far longer but we'll see how it goes when they come up next year, maybe at the varsity level they'll get their act together (not holding my breath).
Anyway if a kid gets a bunch of personal fouls I'd at least bench him for a half, next time a game, and so on.

You can't win without discipline and most surely will lose without it.
Put another way - you have to be willing to lose in order to instill discipline.
You can win with talented kids but you can also lose with them if they are undisciplined-uncoachable.
Unsportsmanlike and Personal Foul penalties hurt the TEAM.
Where is Vontaze Burfict playing now, for ex.? He had a hand in getting his college coach fired because of his behavior in spite of his talent.

Seriously. Is he taking something before the game? By nature his edginess should wear off if it's emotion. If it continues the whole game it might be something pharmaceutical.

Get rid of them for the rest of the year. They have likely poisoned the rest of your team, and getting them out of there may be the only antidote.

Our DC (who has won a State Championship as a HC so he gets a LOT of respect) tells the players that if they get a personal foul, they will be removed from the game and that he would decide when they go back in. If I was a betting man, I would say they would miss a half, maybe the rest of the game. Make examples out of these guys.... otherwise it will spread. Others will think they can do the same.

I'll echo what has been stated about removing the kids from the team. Or at least suspending them for a game. That kind of undisciplined, disrespectful behavior will spread to the team if it's not addressed. We removed two kids from this team this year for that type of behavior and they're both talented athletes. Our season might have been much different if they would have learned from various disciplinarian actions and changed their behavior.
We did our best to give them opportunities to change and grow (ran them, suspended them for a half, suspended them for a game, held multiple conferences, etc..etc..) but it was time to cut ties when we saw some of the other kids displaying bad behavior. When they hired me, I told them I would lose games with a disciplined coachable team over winning games with a lack of discipline.. And, i proved it..

We created a 2 series rule if players committed personal fouls. He's really the only player that continues to do it. Unfortunately I am not the Head Coach, I think we've decided to make them apologize but not bench them as we want to have a clean slate with playoffs.

How many times do you enforce that "2 series" rule before you realize it doesn't work, need to do something more?
joker31 , Good luck, hope this player doesn't cost you a playoff game with penalties - or your reputation as coaches-school.
Also - I don't know what "beaking coaches" from your OP means - but I wouldn't want to work for a HC that allowed the kind of behavior you posted.
Nor would I as HC tolerate it from players towards coaches.
I will be interested to hear how this works out for you.

It would appear that they've already been allowed to show poor behavior and continue to play. That would be why they still think they can do so. That garbage should have been dealt with before now. You can expect to have it continue with these two and with others who see these two get away with it. Why are there so many poorly behaved prima donnas at the next level? Because their high school coaches let them get away with garbage because they are talented. Cant win with them and cant win without them? Then why put up with the problems? If they weren't talented, what would you do with them?

Personally, I hardly ever yell at a kid, maybe when I was younger but not these days...i NEVER cuss a kid and do not believe a coach should, especially on the high school level. If a coach cusses a kid I would say he does open doors for parents and admin to take some actions. That is just me, I do see your point.

I have seen coaches get let go by admin for dropping f bombs, HC called in for assistants language etc. I know some coaches who think that is just the way it has to be done, they just yell and cuss...I personally think there are better ways to get it done.

We rarely tolerate coaches hollering at kids at practice. I can back a coach if they're raising their voice here and there as long as a) it's followed by constructive coaching and b)it's not berating the kids.. But, if they're consistently yelling, we have a problem as it's not proactive. Yelling=discipline.
I don't allow swearing at the kids, period. A little general PG/PG-13 language is acceptable but it can't be directed at anyone. And, we're going to have a problem if a guy is swearing just to swear...

Not to pirate the thread, or the secondary discussion regarding coaches yelling at players, but what about coaches yelling and cursing at each other?
So its a discipline problem if a player yells at a coach (insubordination), and poor coaching practice for a coach to scream at a player. But often times we defend coaches yelling and arguing with each other as 'getting caught up in the heat of the battle as we each try to make our point'.
Is there a material difference here?

Behind closed doors play ball. Out in public way out of line.

I think this is a good point. I really just believe that no one should be yelling and screaming at each other. It obviously happens. It sounds like most people are more strict when it's player to coach. Does the pecking order matter as far as coach to coach yelling? If DC yells at DB coach, is that different than DB coach yells at DC?

Our high school team endured a staggering amount of nonsense this year. Just some truly ridiculous stuff that I have NEVER seen before on a high school football team. It started this summer with a couple senior "leaders" and their parents. And, because it was not dealt with this summer, these kids and their parents were enabled and empowered and it continued to fester.
We ended up 4-5. We lost 4 of those 5 games by a total of 18 points.
In one of those games, we were down 34-27 and drove down to the 5 yard line with about 30 seconds left in the game. Threw an INT in the endzone. Kid who made the interception runs out of the endzone and slides. Whistle blows, game over. One of our senior "leaders" (kid was a captain) comes flying out of nowhere and puts his shoulder into the kid on the ground. Flag gets thrown for a dead ball foul. On that play, there was DPI in the endzone. So, we should have had the ball on about the 3 yard line. But, because it was a dead ball personal foul, we got half the distance marked off from the original spot but then the dead ball personal foul gets marked off. So, instead of going for the score from the 3 yard line, we go from the 18. Completed the pass to the 1-yard line. Game over. We lose.
We were 4-4 going into the last game of the year. About 7 minutes left in the game. We are down 22-20 after scoring. We are starting to take over the game. We are running the ball well. Other team is tired. All we need to do is get a stop and get the ball back and we have a good chance to win, end up 5-4, and get in the playoffs. So, we have them at a 4th and 6 with about 4 minutes left. They bring their punt team out but then they take a timeout. After the timeout, they put their offense back on the field. Everyone in the stadium knows they are going to try and draw us offsides. That is, everyone except one of our "leaders" (same kid in story above). Of course, he encroaches, they get 5 free yards and convert a 4th and 1. On the very next play, another captain, who got his butt kicked most of the night, starts jawing with an official. Official throws a flag on him. 15 more yards. Another first down. We are out of timeouts. They take a knee and run the clock out.
Now, in both of the above situations, we still had to score to win. There's no guarantee we would have. But, the point is, because we were not disciplined and smart, we didn't even give ouselves a chance. We removed any possibility of taking the lead because we had selfish, undisciplined players.
We had the talent to be 6-3 or 7-2 this year. But, our lack of discipline and self-control cost us dearly. It was the most frustrating football season I ever had to sit through. Pains me to say it, but I was glad when it was over. Was not fun to watch.

Discipline above all. Respect for Coaches and Teammates above all. Coaches don't get paid enough money to go through this kind of BS. Some things are non-negotiable. You will respect my authority or you won't play.
Sometimes you have to shoot a hostage to get your message across.

Just an update. Made it to our associations Quarterfinals, lost badly in that game. The week before we blew out another team.
These 2 kids definitely improved. We did a team building activity to get the kids to come together after the s**t show on the sidelines. Those 2 also apolgized for their behaviour to everyone, they were also informed they were taken off any League All-Star ballots and weren’t even nominated because of their actions. Both could have won awards.
They played okay in both playoff games but not great. At the end of the day we should have made sure to squash any of that stuff earlier. With the penalty riddled player, we should have increased consequences. With the other, we shouldn’t have accepted his lazy habits.
Flakiness was an issue team-wide. Some good players, some average. Could have been cause for our inconsistency all season long
