One of the things I’m finding as a dad of two is that my time to watch film is very broken up, generally not being more than 15-20min before one of the two need some attention.
Not having continuity when working through film obviously is not ideal but it is what it is. What I’m looking for are strategies to make sure that I’m getting the most out of those small chunks of film time.
I’ve been just working through the game at 15m a clip but feel like I’m not getting much working through an entire game in that fashion.
Any ideas would appreciated. I know it won’t be like this forever (one is 3 and the other is 3 months). Just looking to be able to balance time with the little ones and be efficient with my film study.

If you are using hudle, you can categorize into clips. All 1st downs opp. 1 All.1st downs opp. 2 All 1st downs opp. 3 Then use dd or whatever to chop it up even more.

Got to do it early or late.
But, here is what I do. ODK and try not really watch but it is tempting. Take the latest film and make a cutup.
Kick first. Make sure I get one of every special team and anything unusual. Get some defensive plays. General stuff, any blitzes, twist, etc. Get goalline, short yardage, long yardage, etc. Get offensive plays. Try not to put same play in there multiple times unless their is a reason for it.
Now that you have your cutup, go through and watch other films and add to the cutup.
When done, clean up the cutup. Go through and actually edit the video so that it starts a second before the snap (unless you want or need more - motion, shift, etc.).
That is all the grunt work. Now watch the cutup whenever you want.

When adding the defensive plays do you try and get a smattering of all the different formations they’ve faced or only stuff that matters based on your offense? If you had to guess how long does it take to tag the film (do the grunt work) to get what you need?

Exactly. I also share this with the team and we watch it at least twice together. Just what matters to us. But that could include a blitz, etc. It could take 1-2 hours.

silkyice I love this idea! Do you have any magic number of clips per play/blitz/etc? Like if you were playing an offense like yours how many clips of Bucksweep would you include or would it depend on how many formations they ran it out of? And defensively would you just show 1 clip each of their base front against each formation you cared about (throwing out ones that are widely different) This would make going back through and watching film through the weekend /week so much easier to do!

No magic number. Just put what you want. So back to buck sweep. So yes, probably every formation (within reason). But definitely, a few of the basic ones. And then anything different. Like one that cuts all the way back or bounces outside or with a different runner that we actually worry about. For instance, when 7 runs it, he likes to stick it up in there. When 3 runs it. He would rather bounce and he tries to spin off every single tackle. Triage the plays. Definite - add. Definite no add. Don’t. Not sure, probably add within reason You can always delete plays from the cutup.

As the HC/OC I want to know:
1. Their top five runs. Are they an option team? 2. Top five formations and if they have any tendencies by formation. 3. What type of passing team are they? Screens and type? 4. Do they have a dude? Do they have someone so dynamic it will require something out of the ordinary? If so I want to be involved in the planning.
I watch the film and scout it separately from the defensive staff. I will make general suggestions, poke holes, and generally mock as the week goes along. I want the global view and only watch enough of their offense to get that. I don't need to know every single wrinkle, trick play or personnel group.
When scouting their defense I only watch them vs similar offenses.
1. How do they align by formation? 2. What are their top stunts/blitzes? By formation? By hash/field? By feel? 3. Best/Worst guy at each level? Who can I attack in the RUN/RPO/PASS games?
How long does all that take? As long as it takes?
The reason I say all that is because I have always been a very disjointed film watcher. I like to watch some film, go away, come back, do another activity unrelated to it and come back again, etc, etc. Usually, by Sunday night I'm set on the attack, but I will watch in small chunks with the team and on my own and will refine the plan in my mind as the week goes on. By taking this approach I always feel like I have a pretty good handle on their DC's personality by Friday night.

60zgo if you were breaking down the opponent defense and the film you had was nothing like what you do offensively how would you go about it? Would you just do the best you could at extrapolating information?

60zgo if you were breaking down the opponent defense and the film you had was nothing like what you do offensively how would you go about it? Would you just do the best you could at extrapolating information? Yes. Which can be really difficult if you run an outlier offense. We ran pure single wing for two years in a state with only one or two other SW teams. So we got some wild adjustments. I'll look at ODD/EVEN first. Okay let's say they are ODD. What are the most logical answers from that front to stop us? Then I go back to what their identity is. Are they MAN all the time? Okay, they aren't installing Zone this week, and vice versa.
