This kinda stuff seems to be happening more frequently. Around here, Illinois State and Iowa have recently threatened to sue schools over mascots. All depends on if it's copyrighted or trademarked. We used the Western Michigan Bronco at a previous stop, but it isn't protected.

I remember hearing in a high school marketing lesson (so this information definitely has credibility issues) was that in order for an organization to keep its trademark intact they have to provide evidence of infringement. So maybe this story is just them trying to keep their brand protected. Or maybe they just missed their name in negative press they had become accustomed to in the recent past.

Wonder if they’d do it if they had a kid that could run?

Wonder if they’d do it if they had a kid that could run? They do. Kids that could run at Ruston wouldn't go to Rutgers.

This is beyond stupid. Nobody in Louisiana knows or cares where Rutgers is. Neither does most of the Big 10.

My old school just switched over to that R about 3-4 years ago, wondering if they're gonna be targeted next

It’s happened for years with multiple universities. There is a school by where I’m at now in Ohio that had to change the coloring and some minuscule portion of their design because they used Arizona’s “A”
While it may be dumb, a copyright/trademark is a copyright/trademark.
Think about how fast the NFL pulls any clips that are sent out...everyone saw the play live but if you tweet it out they shut it down.

Wonder if they’d do it if they had a kid that could run? This is probably my most unprofessional post but, I’m willing to bet that Ruston could beat Rutgers. It would at least be close.

I wonder if they will make NJ State Champ Ramapo HS right down the road change their logo?

Wonder if Ruston knew that they were infringing on a copyright when they chose an R as their logo.

How can you copyright a block letter? Like maybe of you created a whole specific font called Rutgers sure, but a block R with no specific coloring pattern on the inside, seems a little nonspecific to me.

The same way Pat Riley could copyright a phrase ("three-peat")?
This is America after all.

I think this is great. I hate logo poaching. I wish Georgia Tech would send a letter to my school. I refuse to use their Yellow Jacket logo for football, but our other sports use it. We tried to introduce something new, but we were told we couldn't use it.

I don’t know all the details of the case and I’m far from being an IP lawyer, but as I understand it you could probably fight Rutgers because they don’t have much to their R, as you said the colouring isn’t even consistent, vs Michigan’s block M which is a more stylized font and is always maize on blue, or Ohio State with the octagon O. But you’d have to pay a lot in legal fees over a literal letter. So is it really worth it?

Ironically enough, one of their District Opponents uses the Ohio State 'O' with Lions thru it instead of 'Ohio State'.

The only reason Iowa knew about the school using the hawk as their logo was because they recruited one of their players. They'd been using it for years and years. Close to a decade I think.
