Our head coach has resigned and the school is taking resumes for a new head coach and the school is forming a hiring committee. Would it be in poor taste to ask the principal if I could be on the hiring committee? I have no plans to leave the school and I am not in the running to be the head coach. I just feel since myself and the rest of the coaching staff that are staying that we should have some input in the process. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

yes, especially if they plan on keeping the staff, it would be different if they were bringing in a guy and letting him hire his own asst.

or in lieu of being on the hiring committee, I think you should at least be allowed to submit a list of characteristics and qualities of the new HC

to piggyback of ignorantrookie, maybe have the finalist meet with the staff at some point during his visit?
I've gone to an interview were the AD took me out for lunch and the varsity staff was at the cafe waiting for us to eat lunch with me and just have a relaxed conversation about football, the school, conference, etc....

Most of the interviews I have been in that have a committee included a coach from the current staff. In most cases, at least in Minnesota, a new coach is not going to have the freedom to bring in a whole new staff. I think that having a staff member who would like to continue with the program on the committee is a huge positive - someone who knows the game amd knows the kids is going to have invaluable insights. I would talk to the AD, Warrior, and make the request that yourself or another member of the staff be part of the process.

Those of you who have responded to Warrior- would your answers be different if current staff were interviewing for the job as well? In my situation the Varsity DC & the sophmore HC have applied for the job.

By asking the Principal or AD if you can be on the committee you are showing them you have the interests of the team in mind. Unless there is some reason you should be left off, I'm sure they would welcome it.
