How is your staff set up in the way that it requires coaches to be there during the summer months?
My past job we opened the weightroom up 4 days a week with 3 of those being open in the morning and evening.. was opened from 8am-10am and 6pm-8pm.. it was an open policy for the kids.. they could come whenever they wanted, but during those 7 two hour periods a week.. but had to make a certain amount during the summer..
Our HC wanted all coaches to be there anytime the doors were open.. so a lot of times you would have 6 of us there with 5 or less kids at times..
Another guy I used to work for had the same schedule, but allowed 1 coach to have the weightroom for an entire week.. and we rotated weeks.. Guys who worked the 7 on 7 all summer never had a weekly rotation..
How do you have it set up?
How would you like to set it up if it were up to you?

We have 2 coaches at each weightlifting session. One to run the weightroom and one to run our SAQ workouts. At our 7 on 7 practices and tournaments we usually get most of our coaches there. Its usually vacations, family issues, or summer classes that cause our guys to not be at our workouts.
I found the key is to get the info out to the assistant coaches in April so they can plan ahead with their families to make as many of the football workouts as possible.

This is a great topic because my HC and I were just discussing this last night. We are open M-Th 2x a day. I am responsible for the morning and someone else is responsible for the evening. But we want 2 people in at all times. Unfortunately, there have been days where no one but us would show up for our times. And we finally decided we needed to give coaches a set number of days responsible for the weight room.
Now, my only problem with all of that is their knowledge of the weight room and lifting procedures. Do you have confidence that all your coaches are properly trained to run the weight training sessions? If not, what do you do?

We have weight/SAQ workouts twice a day, 0600-0800 and 1700-1900. This goes M-T-TH-F. The HC takes the morning session and assistants take the afternoon sessions on a rotating basis. Most of the players attend the morning sessions. The sessions are split with weights and then SAQ (or whatever the coach wants to do).
There was no coordination of which coaches will take which afternoon sessions. This is a merger of two staffs, our returning staff and the new staff that came from our town rivals. I know nothing about weights (yet, but I'm learning) so I pretty much babysit the lifting - they know what they are supposed to do.
On Wednesdays we have a no-pads practice from 4-6 where most of the coaches show up. We run it like an in-season practice. We are likely to have passing league each Wed. as well.
We will start conditioning week on Aug. 13, and double-days on the 20th.
We're in the Northern Section in CA and they shut down from June to Aug so we can do whatever we want. They basically shut their eyes during the summer. With school approval, we could run full-contact double-days every day during the summer if we wanted.

How we do it is 600a - 715 a & 300p - 400p ~ M-T-W-TH-SA (optional / makeup)
T/TH were more speed training days SA were plyos (with lifts)
HC is at all workouts with another coach. We usually would get 2-4 coaches at every session. It wasn't REQUIRED to attend as a coach.....because we're gonna lift regardless, but weight sessions are what build your team chemistry and deeper relationships
We have done it where only am lift sessions all summer were available, too (because of low numbers in pma)

We were just talking about this with the HC the other day. Our Schedule is M,T,Th,F weight room and conditioning. Wed we have an hr and half practice helmets. Everyday it is Me the OC the HC and the DC the other two full time coaches work 40hrs a wk during summer so kids don't see them all summer. This after our HC told us he wanted us there as much as possible, but he says he can't tell them not to work. This is not fair to us or the kids!! Our other 2 coaches are volunteers and they are their more than the other two. One is a police officer and when he is on nites comes during the day the other comes to all 7 on 7. Does anyone else have this problem and if so how do you deal with it?

We lift in the mornings - 9am to 10am and do functional training for another hour.
We have about 40-55 kids in the weight room on M, Tu, Th, & F.
Our program has 120 kids in it and we require 38 workouts of a total of 50 during the late-spring to summer months. If a kid get's less than 38, he has extra conditioning when the season begins. No hard feeling and no questions asked. - 38 is the goal. Our main guys usually get 40-45
We man the weight room with two scheduled coaches and do it on a rotational basis. The schedule is release in early-spring - Coaches will finalize dates with their family's and then we set up the supervision schedule. Most often, than not, there are more than two coaches that show up any given day.
All of our 10 coaches receive a coaching stipend and there is no bitchin' about putting in time - it just isn't tolerated. Some of our younger coaches work jobs in the summer so the established coaches do a little more weight room time but that's called "teamwork." We talk a lot and make it work for our players.
The big piece is that our staff is very cohesive and we communicate a great deal.
Requiring your entire staff to be there during the summer might be overkill. We want to work hard but we also want to work smart. Just our way of doing this.

we went to what we call summer conditioning class. you have to signup before the end of school. it is open to all kids regardless of sport and kids who just want to lift. you have to be signed up to enter the weight room. class is sun, tue and thur nights and monday, wednesday, friday mornings. stretching, lifting, plyos, agility training, areobic workouts.
well we cannot make you come(it is against state rules) those who show up are so further ahead of those who do not. we take attendence. there is no just coming in when you feel like it. it is a class. it is divided into segments.

We go M-W-Thursday from 9-10 a.m. or from 7-8 p.m for weights. We usually do passing league on Tuesday nights. Our coaches are at most of the passing leagues and 2 sessions of weights a week. We hit a couple camps and host our own as well. In Michigan we have a lot of rules regarding off-season. For instance, we have a week where you can't see your players at all. You can never do anything with any more equipment than a helmet.

We go 6-8am, M,T,Th. About 60 kids but our weight room can only accomodate about 30 at a time so we rotate two groups. The other hour they condition. I'm the strength coach and I don't trust anyone else, even the head coach, to run it other than the two guys that are always there with me in the morning (both good, hard working volunteers). Sure the kids know what to do, but its like having the DB coach yell at your receivers - he may not be wrong but its too many different hands. All coaches who are available are there.
Kids understand if a coach has a situation and can't be there. As long as they do their job durin the season. I'm there every day, I want to be and I don't care that other coaches have other things going on. Now, if a guy was unseen from November to July, and come August got promoted over me, we have a problem!

This is an outstanding idea. We have had excellent attendance in our football workouts, especially recently. I feel that the other kids get shafted due to lazy coaches, coaching turnover, etc. This would strengthen all our sports. To keep from hurting our football workouts I would probably do one time for football and another for all other sports (football would still have more in attendance). One question for you Airman. If a student transfers into your school in early or mid-summer do you allow them to sign-up if they show strong interest?

our schedule is m,t,w,th weight room 10 am-12:30. then we have practice/conditioning those same days from 2-4 on the field. our budget will pay ONE coach a summer stipend to work the weightroom, and thats me, so im there every day. however, the other coaches all rotate and come in to help me one day a week. so mon its the wr coach, tues the db coach, etc. it works out that there is always 2 guys in the weight room, even though im the only one getting paid. as for practice, we have at least 4 to 5 coaches in attendance. its shorts/t-shirts no pads no helmets... so we are limited in what we can do. we usually do sprint work for the first hour then break up for an hour of individual work. we have done two 7 on7 scrimmages and one tournament... and al;l coaches have been there for those. we are prety flexible and if one coach has a problem (child care issue, etc.) we cover for him. our equipment is issued aug 1st, then we gave the kids a week off before we begin camp.

If a student transfers into your school in early or mid-summer do you allow them to sign-up if they show strong interest? transfer rules are really very strict in wisconsin. basically unless you move into a district, if you chose to transfer you sitout like the college boys do. but yes if a kid moves in and is going to play then yes. we cannot do any with a football but we can do agility and plyos. this is what makes it attractive to all kids. it is more then just weight training. I mean we set up periodzation cycles for them. we test them for max bench and max hipsled or squat.
