Hi Coaches,
I coach with a semi-pro women's team. One thing that's hard about being in these kind of leagues is that we have to purchase rental space to practice. To save costs, we often end up just finding an open public space to hold practice instead. Unfortunately, the trade-off is we have no football lines or land-marks for players to orient themselves.
I'm very anal/stringent on depth and width in terms of alignments, such as TB MUST be at six yards, the shotgun snap must be 4.5 yards, LB's must be at four yards back, etc...at least when we're first installing our system at the start of the season.
Are there any kind of products out there that can help with this? Something in particular that is flat and can be stepped on/ran over. I know about scrimmage tape, but something else to maybe help out backs, receiver, etc? There's cones obviously, but they have height and can obstruct players' paths. I remember in high school I saw these completely flat, rubber/floppy cones (no height on them), but that was 10 years ago. Any other suggestions or ideas?

Make a scrimmage strip out of 3" flat drain hose It rolls up easily, doesn't get waterlogged like firehose, and is light enough to move easily. It runs about $1.00 per foot from eBay. You'll have to figure how much you need by doing a little math. For our DW, with tight splits, we needed about 25 feet. Use paint to mark your splits, and place marks on it (combimned with flat cones (aka "frisbees") for your interior line and backfield spacing.

You can cut some lengths of string or twine for the distances you want. However, I find the toughest thing about practicing w/o lines is getting your lines straight. Even the flat cones get kicked out of line. So you also need a few big cones -- even traffic cones -- on the edges to sight along. Flexible soccer or rugby corner flag sticks would be very good for this. The paint that freezeoption mentioned above is a good idea as well, except I don't know about painting up public spaces. There's always agricultural marking foam. It's made of soap, so it'll be gone in a few hours.

We practice on soccer fields and always bring low cones. I have also tapes a black and grey duct tape together. Its weather resistant and can easily be rolled up. I taped black tape on the grey side and vice versa to show spacing.
