Some groups of kids are naturally tight. They like each other, encourage each other, and exhibit a great work ethic. There may be a core group who played youth league. But, when they get to HS, they have a common sense of purpose.
Then there are the disjointed groups. Sometimes it is poor leadership. Sometime it is just a group of kids that don't like each other. Sometimes there is jealousy or feelings of not belonging to the group.
Many teams go to camp and particularly overnight camps seem to be good at raising comraderie. My question is, what have some of you done to increase team unity? Was it special events - or did you change the way you coach?
In Marine Corps boot camp, the Drill Instructors do may things to teach unity. Most are pretty harsh. But, they worked. Others were uplifting. I found running and singing while we ran to be very good at teambuilding. Do any of you do things like this?

I put them in challenging situations, and make them work together to get through it. It's almost me vs them. I put the entire workout on the clock. It one group is not ready (bar loaded, 1st man ready etc) evryone pays. It forces groups that have it together to help the ones that are still learning.
Everyone has to finish runs in under a certain time. They encourage each other to get through it.
There was some bullying at first. I punished those who where bullying. ...So far so good.

We do a lot of things... we go to team camp, have summer conditioning days run by the players (swimming, dodge-ball, basketball, etc... things that are fun), bowling night (line vs. backs... a lot of fun) and team dinners. We just finished (about 30 min. ago) doing an "8 mile drive". We drove the ball on offense for 8 miles... started at 7AM, and just finished at 5PM. We had a BBQ around noon, rested a bit, played paint ball for a while... then finished the drive. I'm beat. I think it was a good experience for our team (one that needs to develop a bit more in the area of unity). Plus, we ran a lot of plays for V/JV kids... so that might be good (at least we can run a Toss now at all levels).

Senior Retreat, Team Camp, Leadership Training, and some games worked into workouts have helped us.
