How do you handle people who come out late to camp? We only have 1 week of two-a-days and two weeks of practice before school starts, and took 1 player the third day of practice. There are others who could have helped the team, but they were out of town for one reason or another. Since they didn't come to double days I said they couldn't be on the team, but could still play on our MS team as 9th graders. (they also didn't make arrangements w/ me before hand) What's your policy for latecomers?

Depends on circumstances but we usually allow freshman to come out late. The cannot participate scrimmages or games until all missed conditioning is made up.

I agree that latecomers should be considered on a case-by-case basis. Generally, there are three griups of players who I'd consider:
1. Young players. They don't understand the system
and are often indecisive. Nature of the beast.
2. Transfers.
3. Guys for whom I must crane my neck way up high
to look them in the eyes.

Thanks for the words guys. We operate under an odd system, to me anyway, that allows all 9th to play on our MS team. We don't have a JV. So 9th graders always have the chance to play somewhere if they don't come to camp. However, b/c the trend has been for declining team #'s I want to remove the MS option. I want 9th to practice with us, but play w/ MS if they're not getting varsity time. this means I want them to come to camp. Any advice on how to handle this? I don't want to make the announcement next year that if you don't come to camp as a 9th grader, you can't practice w/ varsity, b/c we need the numbers. What about offering letters to those who make it though camp even though they may not meet playing time requirements?
As for transfers, anyone new to the school can come out when school starts. Speaking of which do you have any 3rd stringers for us Phantom? just kidding. ;D
