[glow=red,2,300]Report: 'Bama offers job to Rodriguez[/glow]Alabama's search for a new coach appears to be picking up speed. Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban said Thursday he declined to meet with Alabama officials about their coaching vacancy, while media reports had West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez being offered the job. The Press-Register of Mobile, citing unnamed sources, first reported the offer to Rodriguez from Crimson Tide athletic director Mal Moore on its Web site, and said the coach was considering the offer. The Tuscaloosa News also reported on its Web site that Alabama offered Rodriguez the job. Alabama spokesman Doug Walker told The Associated Press the university did not have an announcement scheduled. click here for full story -- Sports Illustrated

My source says the offer was made to Bob Stoops late last week but he wasn't ready to pull the trigger - told Mal Moore if he couldn't wait that he understood, BUT to give him another call at the end of the week if Bama was still interested. It's not over yet...

Reports on ESPN said this morning that Rodriguez took the job. He will be getting $12 million over 6 years....Feel bad for all those WV kids that he told he would stay there for the rest of his coaching career but I guess money talks pretty loud. I can not wait for the yearly Bama vs. Florida matchup. Two of the guys that have helped revolutionize the spread offense going head to head.

Going to be interesting in the SEC and ACC next year. If Leach gets that job at Miami we could be looking at some really enteratining football coming from the south. I still feel bad for the kids at WV; the program has really been going in the right direction the past yfew ears. Hopefully Rod'ssuccessor can keep the ball rolling. Maybe we can even get a a non-conference game between Bama and the Mountaineers.

Does WVU go after Todd Graham? Looks like he did a great job at Rice and he has WVU ties right?

cb, the Mountaineers weren't exactly bottom feeders under Don Nehlen.

Good choice by Bama; not sure about Rodriquez's choice. I know the money is great, but there is a lot of underclass talent on that WV team.

I just heard that Rodriquez might be staying at WVU. A report from a Morgantown Station says that WVU and Rodriquez are negotiating on him staying.
This could get interesting....

Good choice by Bama; not sure about Rodriquez's choice. I know the money is great, but there is a lot of underclass talent on that WV team. That was my first thought. Why leave when you could be very good again next year? I believe they only lose 3 starters on defense and 2 on offense.

Yes, coachbronk, right after I posted the above message, I left to pick up lunch and heard on espnradio that it indeed isn't a done deal and WV is trying to sweetin their offer to Rodriquez. This might get fun with these two schools bidding on each other. Apparenty, Rodriquez is meeting with his players right now. ESPN is now reporting that Rodriquez is STAYING at WVU. WOW, what a blow to Bama. Stoops will be next.

I'm a long way away from this situation, but it seems to me Oklahoma is a much better job than Alabama right now - unless there's something we don't know, or it's all about the $$, and 'Bama is willing to outbid OU (seems unlikely if they couldn't buy Rodriguez).

bearcat, read above before you post. Rodriguez is staying at WVU, and Chris Rainey isn't any different than hundreds of other kids every year who play for "big time" HS programs and get recruited by the college big boys.
You can turn yourself into a Maurice Clarett, or you can be a Reggie Bush, LaDainian Tomlinson, etc.

Rodriguez will stay at West Virginia
Spurned again, Alabama is resuming its latest search for a football coach. This time it was West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez saying no thanks Friday to the program still yearning for a leader to steer it back to the powerhouse days of Bear Bryant. "There weren't many reasons not to go. It's all about the reasons for staying," Rodriguez said. "I'm biased, this is my school. I think it's a great place to raise a family. We've always had a great athletic tradition." Rodriguez will receive a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season from West Virginia. Other details of the deal were not immediately released. He called reports in Alabama that he had agreed in principle to a deal "totally incorrect." click here for full story from si.com

+1. Like I said in another post, Alabama is looking for the next Bear Bryant. You know what? They'll keep on looking for a long time! Wasn't there a long period of search and wait after Mike Price "resigned" because of what he did? I don't know about the rest of you, but IMO, 'Bama is a coaches nightmare. Like I said, that's just my $.02.

alamabama must get the ncaa's approval on their hire since they are still under probation. the coach they hire must not have any type of current violations or "major" trouble with the ncaa

huey, does that let Stoops out (if he was ever really in) the running because of the trouble his QB got into last year?
And, did you really mean "alamabama"? Is that a Texanese expression?

Bama's problem is they believe a name will fix them, just like they believed a alum could fix them. Maybe they should look at Tressell's resume before he got to Ohio State and go that route. But ala it's Bama and they wouldn't do that.

I don't know if Alabama is better than Oklahoma but obviously the $ will be better as Stoops can demand the bank. He also can accept the same challenge he did at Oklahoma - namely take a once great program that has fallen (sort of) and take them back to the top! Probably a little bit of ego stroking to be able to do it twice. My source says that want someone who "has already won a National Title" and also has ties to the South. Spurrier is out so Stoops is the only one left. Although I agree 100% that following the Tressel route (I-AA coach) is a great idea.

This was mentioned several days ago. I would have no problem with Paul Johnson and his offense going to Alabama. However, I am not the one doing the hiring. Johnson also fits the model of Jim Tressell ie: National Championship coach, along with Bama's desire for a "Southern" coach.

Bama Finally Hires New Tide CoachGreenbow, AL native, Forrest Gump, has accepted the Head Football Coaching position at the University of Alabama. While at Alabama Gump was a standout All-American running back and was coached by the legendary Bear Bryant. As part of his contract Gump insists on being able to work with the Turf Management Crew at Bryant-Denny Stadium. He specifically wants to cut the grass.

FBDOC you are not far off, I have also heard Stoops mentioned.
Reports I have heard have him asking for a call back this week if Bama is really serious.
