Two seasons ago we started this process:
Season One coaching Staff: not everyone was on board but we did get markedly better at the positions that figured things out.
OL/DL/DE- coaches worked pods together- each would take a group and work a specific drills. They collaborated on a daily basis and game planned extensively.
OL-was HC for JV
DL- was varsity DC
DE- was 9th grade DC
LB/RB- coaches worked together to collaborate drills- LB coach led as RB coach lacked experience
LB- varsity special Team coordinator
RB- 9th grade special teams coordinator
QB/WR/C/Saftey/F&Y- this was a mess, little communication, little ownership, low continuity
QB- HC varisty and OC
WR- OC JV
C- 9th grade HC & OC-- very good coach
Safty/F&Y- way too much on his plate- JV DC
Issues that arose-
#1- the communication from each level of defensive play was disjointed and HC stayed hands off so it only got worse as season went on. Lots of ego and territory issues.
#2- athletes that didn't have traditional position switches- LB that played Guard, or WR/DE kind of kids got left out in some drills- basically transitions were not as smooth as possible.
#3- our schemes were very simple defensively so practices were all about technique
Year 2(2019)
Same position groups but we made it clear that position coaches needed to communicate effectively. We added a couple of capable volunteers which made a world of difference in secondary groups.
Practice Week schedule:
Monday-
Varsity lift in am
4:05- practice for everyone- warm up, walk through, basic scout report of the week's opponent, varsity condition and then 9th grade has team practice, varsity has chains, clock and sideline for JV game. JV games start at 5:30 and they are dismissed from practice at 5:00 to get a PB&J and warm up for game.
Tuesday-
4:05-Stretch/necks
4:15- Tackling stations
4:40- D Indy-
5:00- water
5:05- D groups- inside/skelly- 2 groups of inside between 45 yard lines- 3 groups of skelly- 1 north, 1 south, 1 grass
5:20- D team- Varsity/JV on North end- 9th/10th on south end
5:35- O indy
5:55- water
6:00- O groups- 2 inside/2 skelly
6:10- Varsity/JV 44 man drill, 9th/10th 33 man drill
44 man- 2 offenses run the same play against 2 variations of the D we face that week
33 man- 1 offense runs the same play against 2 variations of the D we face that week
Coaching assignments- 44 man- HC/OC- calls plays, DL sets 1st D, LB sets 2nd D, OL coaches kids
Coaching assignment- 33 man- 9th & JV OC's call plays monitor players assignments, Safety Coach 1st D, RB coach 2nd D
6:25- team announcements
Issues:
#1- hired a new coach and he was not sold on the process, liked to do his own thing
#2- defensively opened up scheme drastically and a couple of coaches were not fully up to speed, stuck on technique that was no longer a huge part of what happened on game day.
#3- HC needed to be more pro-active in the details of practice planning... some coaches were not prepared for their indy sessions.
