Have a question about helping out a rival school. I was talking to a coach the other day about offense and he asked me if I had any material on a particular offense that he could look at. I do, problem is they are our biggest rival. They are 10 minutes away, another rural town, etc. He is a great guy, any suggestions?

why not extend a helping hand? if he don't get it from you, he will get it somewhere.... gives you the chance to know the way they are doing it as the system they employ (terminology, rules, etc.) may be slightly different if he gets from someone else. so, look at it like this, if you give it to him, you have better chance of knowing exactly what they are wanting to do.
also, doesn't help to make & keep connections in this business.

there must be some thing they do which you might want to understand better. see if you can pick each others minds.
as zig ziglar says"you can have every thing you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want"

Great advice. There are no secrets anyway...unless he wanted to know your hot colors or something.

Thanks, that is what I was leaning towards. Like I said, I am a homer for my alma matter, and it's the biggest rival in our schools history. So I not only coach against this team, I played against them in high school. Again, thanks.

Coach, something else comes to mind if you share with him your resources like this site that will be a great benefit. I have shared with rival schools simply to help the kids, what you run isn't the secret how you run it is. Us coaches are in the business of helping kids be better people and athletes and the only way we can do that is to help each other as coaches become better also. Who knows could make the rivalry more interesting. and fun.

AS much as you do not like your rival, I have learned that you have a higher calling to the profession!

One of our biggest conference rivals gave us a ton of help a year ago when we played a team that had beaten this rival team the week before in the playoffs. We got gamefilm, tendencies, scouting reoprts, you name it. I would definately help out a team from our conference.
Now, we have had coaches from other conferences call us and want gamefilm on other teams in our conference during the playoffs and we do not do that.

The only "secret" I don't want my opponents to have....is how to beat our PERSONNEL....

The way I see it, I will help anyone who asks me. Some time down the road I may want a favor from someone - what can I expect from other people if I have been picky about who I have helped?

helping a rival doesn't matter...it not like you are giving them your playbook. maybe they will help you out by giving you some more game film for an opponent

rival or not, the profession and the courtesies that go with it are paramount.
As my old HC used to say"it doesnt matter if they have my playbook, they still wont be able to know what I plan to do with it to kick their @ss." (sorry he was called the mad Italian for a reason)
Its true to. They can have your playbook, but unless they know your hots, audibles, and adjustments it wont really matter. This isnt the Waterboy and the magical playbook. Or is it? :S

Only good things can come from helping another coaching staff. The only people that don't share are arrogant and think they have all the answers. This is a profession of sharing ideas. Sharing concepts and basics and not your "little secrets" is what should be going on all the time in my opinion. "Help a brother out" as they say. It will help you out also in the long run.
