We have 37 fb players in grades 9-11. Of those 37, 24 are competing in a winter sport (basketball or wrestling). I wish all 37 were competing in something, but I am curious about how our numbers compare with other schools. By the way, we are a 3A in Kansas with about 270 students in grades 9-12.
Also, what are your feelings about multi-sport athletes? Do you encourage your fb players to be 3-sport athletes?

I encourage ours to be involved in a sport every season (which is 4 in Iowa).
FB Wrestling/Basketball Track Baseball
We have a ton of guys who do 3 sports. We still lift and do SAQ, but being in a competitive situation is good for them, and good for us in the fall.

Almost all of our varsity guys play basketball. In fact, I can only think of two who don't.
Most of the basketball players do a good job of lifting during the season (2 days a week).

I wish all of our kids would get out and COMPETE! I don't think we can overstate the value of competition. Several of our non-basketball and non-wrestling kids will participate in some powerlifting meets, but it isn't the same. I am not sure how many will be out for track or baseball in the spring either. Fortunately all 37 of our returners will be in a weightlifting class 2nd semester.
Brad, what is SAQ?

We have numbers smaller than superpowers (200ish 9-12) and we encourage/need these athletes to compete in the other sports. We go through streaks where most of the FB kids are out for other sports and years when many do not go out for other sports. Those are the years that we struggle because typically the athletes will compete year round.

We have around 700 kids in school, around 65 in the Football program. Of those, 14 wrestle and 12 play basketball. Most of the rest are in weightlifting right now. All will be in weightlifting beginning Jan. 15th. We have had a hard time with getting our guys involved in winter sports; they seem to want to take a break after our playoff runs. The spring season we're set. I have nearly 40 in track plus almost a dozen play baseball.

Of our 65 players, we have about 20 in wrestling or basketball. I wish the numbers were higher, especially in wrestling.

We are a school of about 2100, and we strongly encourage our players to be multi-sport athletes - as others have stated, there is no substitute for being in a competitive situation. We really push wrestling and track, the only other two sports in our (and most other) school(s) that don't cut anyone, as well as being the two that we feel are the most beneficial for our athletes.

We also have a lot of multi sport athletes. We encourage it. I don;t have hard numbers but I would guess at least 2/3 of the football kids do a winter or spring sport.
Our strength program is not what it should be in terms of participation but we are getting better.

We're a small school (250 in 9-12) and almost every one of our varsity players is on a winter sport - for us that means basketball and SOCCER . I wish we had a coach who wanted to start a wrestling program! We're also going to be hiring one MS Math and one HS History (must be able to teach AP) this coming year (2007-08) and I need both of them to be Varsity FB coaches! Anybody looking to move to South Florida and work at a great Christian school?
