I have been given the privilege of organizing and designing a new coaches course geared toward the head coaches role of running a high school program. I have several ideas of what I want to do with the course but would like your input and feedback on topics or issues you feel should be part of the course. Over the length of the course my students will develop both a players manual and a separate program manual. Thanks for any help.

Budget, issues, concerns, and safety with equipment, liability, how to handle a staff, communication with staff, team and community, dealing with parents, practice planning for 2 way players, team rules.
Those are a few topics that just came to me. I'm sure there are many more.

i know everybody will be wanting to add the x's and o's......
i'd say add the things we do that don't fit into the football catagory.... community relations fund raisers field work.....grass seed, fertilizer, msma, round up.....proper field care calendar for the year plumbing general handyman work......painting, carpentry, equipment repair.....
my old header's first rule of field care was......if you have a problem with the spray rig, don't stop on the field to check it.......he had to learn this one the hard way he told me......he stopped on the 40 to check the spray rig because a boom pole was stuck......the rig was full of msma......it sprayed on the same spot for about 45 seconds......he burned a hole all the way to china........
i think the field care section would be really good....i've been doing this 10 years, and i still have to call coaches sometimes to ask if i should spray....when i should spray....to early....to late.....it just rained...it's gonna rain.....how much to mix......all of that....

MAke sure you add in somthing about how to deal with a groups of suspensions do to drinking or somthing like that. Also how to deal with a former coach of the school that was fired and doesn't leave the kids alone and has them at his house every sunday watching film.

One of the things we have done is I.D. our top 5 best attributes of the program, and list the worst 5 things that need major improvement, revamping or deletion.
And, How to fix the bad items while enhancing the good ones.
Once the staff and admin. agree on that, it automatically puts everybody critical on the same page and mode.

Everything mentioned is great.
Something else good would be what to look for when interviewing/questions to ask the admin etc. You know, things that automatically raise red flags.
....why was the last coach fired/resigned? ....why has the program floundered for the last 10 years? ....will the admin make an effort when hiring teachers to fill any openings on your staff?
Those are just a few that come to my mind....

Great ideas so far.
How about a semester/year-long project? The coaches would develop their own program manual using the information presented throughout the course. Similar to a teaching portfolio from student teaching, but the coaching version.

You might also bring in a tech savvy person to discuss different programs (excel, video editing, etc...) that will go over and stress how being able to use this types of technology will help with organization.
I think some of us older coaches miss the boat with not at least being familiar with these things and how they operate. If doesn't have to be a full indepth lecture, just a 'if you knew how to use this, then you will be able to do this.....'

Thanks guys for all the information. This will be an online course. Any teaching aids such as utube videos of coaches blowing up, ect would be helpful. Thanks for everyone's input.

How about designing a philosophy. What do you do and why do you do it? Plumbers do what they do because they are good at dealing with plumbing, electricians do what they do because they are good at it and aren't afraid to get shocked once in a while. Why do you run the kind of offense you run and how did you go about installing it. Do you run the Wing T because its consistent and can adapt to many different styles of athletes or do you run the Air Raid because you like to take a few risks and throw it down the field a bit.
Just my idea.

A lot of the items that have been mentioned are great.
Communication (with staff, with parents, with community) Youth Programs (What shoudl you be involved in, what shouldn't you be) How to plan and conduct meetings. Staff management & organization Hiring & Firing Leadership Theory Professionalism (How does your behavior change once you become a head coach?) I agree with the comment about mentoring young staff.

How about the "Year of the Bull" video? Definitely a good lesson on what not to do. If you haven't heard of it, just look it up on YouTube and check it out. There is at least one thread on here about it as well.

I know it has been said, but I think there is a big concern with this. DEALING w/ Parents. Parents need to know up front before the season starts what their role is with the program. They need to know when is an appropriate time to contact the coaching staff, and they need to know what concerns they are allowed to come to the staff about. For example, If I was a HC there is no questioning playing time, personnel, or scheme. I have learned a lot the last two years coaching high school football and mostly it has been off the field stuff. I coached 4 years at the college level after playing in college, and I never had to deal with parents. High school football is a complete different world.

I have a program manual that could help as well as a power point that highlights parts of the manual for a preseason parent meeting. Different parts are from other coaches as well as my own material. I think I have covered almost everything that has been mentioned previously in this thread.
I have it in 6 parts: Part 1: -mission statement -things to remember for a successful program -program goals -team rules -monthly responsibilities -sample year long calender -HC expectations -assistant expectations -ms expectations -player expectations Part 2: -camp/2 a days expectations (coaches/kids) -camp/2 a day itinerary Part 3: -in season sample practice schedule -game schedule -game day itinerary (home/ away) -individual award system -weekly itinerary -equipment price list -film breakdown itinerary -scouting composite schedule -scouting expectations -scouting questionare Part 4: -off-season weight training expectations -weight room safety regulations -weight room expectations Part 5: -nutrition plan Part 6: -Parent cover letter -preseason parent outline -parent pointers -parent/coach communication (chain of command protocall) -parent expectations -determination of playing time
I tried to include everything I could think of that needed to be addressed.
If anyone has any ideas of other things I need to include let me know. If anyone wants to see any part of what I have email me at: gschwens@louisiana.k12.mo.us and I will forward it to you

After reading several of the other posts on this forum, I TRULY believe that a coaching class should include a unit on STATISTICAL ANALYSIS & INTERPRETATION.

I think that the nuts and bolts of running a program would be useful: practice planning/scripting/drawing scout cards; delegating to assistants; professional ethics (in-house and out); the importance of research and development in the off-season; involving assistants in the off-season program; etc.
