Hey everyone This year we are moving from a 3 team pre-season scrimmage to a 4 way scrimmage. In the past I have never been a fan of these because I think its more risk for injury but we are in it now and committed so I am just curious as to what are some of your favorite formats for a productive 4 way scrimmage? All of the schools in ours will be smaller rosters between 20-30 kids per varsity squad. Appreciate any suggestions thanks

Did one a few years back. Two team vs the other two.
Say team A and B are on one team. Team C and D are on the other.
1st quarter, A plays offense and B plays defense for their team. C plays offense and D plays defense for their team.
So team A has the ball vs team D defense. When the change possesion, team B plays defense vs team C offense.
Positive points. Cool to combine with another team on the sideline. Good to be able go only every other series, so that you can rest and coach up. Conditioning isn’t a factor.
Negative points. You are only playing one half of offense and defense total. Tough to get everyone in meaningful minutes.

I think the "standard" format is some version of:
2 half fields (40 and in) so all 4 teams are playing at once. 10 plays O / 10 plays D. Maybe do a second set of this. I usually prefer just one. 10 minutes running block of "Game Situation" - moving the ball, turnovers and failed 3rd down give the other team the ball.
10 minute break between sessions. Play against all 3 teams. Sometime you match up against one of the teams for a longer "game situation" using the whole field for a 20 or 30 minute running clock at the end.
At the end you should have about 30 plays of offense/defense like "practice" and around an hour of "game situation". Or you can do more "practice" rounds and limit game situation time. Either is fine. I don't personally like to get more then about 60 total reps of offense / defense in a scrimmage. I'd be just fine with 45 decent reps and going home.

I know you mention conditioning isn't a factor, do you think this hurts or helps you as you get ready for week 1?

We usually don’t do scrimmage games before our first game, so for us, it didn’t hurt. It was an enjoyable experience. But not sure it is the “best” way, but it wasn’t a “bad” way to do it.

We do it every year. Each team plays the other for 20 min. 10 of O and 10 of D from the 40 in. Then played 1 team for a quarter of game situation. Running clock.

We do ours basically as a round robin where everyone plays everyone else. We've done it based on time and other times we've done a play count with a running play clock. Michigan has 8 divisions so most of the scrimmages I've been involved with have had teams from four different divisions so nobody ever has a chance of playing in the playoffs or something.

do it on # of plays not time. Also break it down to say 15 from the 40 and then 5 from inside the 10. Stick to the number, no matter how much the other coach bitches or says "couple more coach" stick to the number. Have refs, tell them to stick to the number, they can be the bad guy. We do this and we are on and off in an hour tops. You can do 25 plays, 15 with #1s and 10 with #2s. Also don't invite teams who want to win the JV state title, you know the VinceNickLombardiSaban coaches. schedule coaches you can trust to stick to the rules and play safe.
