My dad coaches at a different school than me, and their team is scrimmaging the first team on our schedule. Would it be unethical to go watch or get tape of that scrimmage from my dad?

I don't see any issues with that.

It's not at all unethical to go watch a scrimmage. Way back before the VCR, we used to call that scouting. If you really want to be over-the-top fair, offer the opposing coach a copy of your scrimmage tape. I'd be sure to get the endzone tape from your dad though.

Shoudn't be a problem. If you do have the opertunity to see it in person I would. You could get a sense of what kind of speed they really have and other things that you just can't learn from film.

I hope that's not unethical cause we do that every year.

That is fair. It is your job to prepare and coach your team just like the other coach should be doing.

I think watching scrimmages used to be more of an issue than it is today. Some people are still a bit touchy about having their scrimmage scouted. But the suggestion to trade tapes is a good one.
Last season I tried phoning and emailing the coach from the first team on our schedule. I had to leave messages. I basically said I would like to scout scrimmages and if he wants to trade tapes that is fine with me. He never responded to my messages. But he did show up to scout in person, so I took that as an ok, and scouted theirs.

You need to be at the scrimmage, say your supporting your Dad. Bring a voice recorder or bring some pen and paper. Write dowh or speak into the recorder what they are doing. Taping the game yes would be unethical. if you want to trade behind your dads back to get film do it, thats really between him and the guy he scrimmaged.

Two things, my dad isnt the head coach and I wanted to bring at least our head coach and maybe another guy. Still within the bounds of reasonable?

Where I coach, we exchange scrimmage dates, times and locations. There are no suprises with anybody. Usually it is just the first two opponents that you play that you will exchange the information with. After that, we will have two game films for the week three opponent.

Everyone here exchanges scrimmage tapes as well as scouts in person. (usually a jr. high coach) They during the season we trade two weeks and usually tape another ourselves so we have 3 weeks of game film to help us prepare. So, in answer to your question I don't think it's unethical, I would call the coach and let him know what you're doing though so he can return the favor.
