I am both the Head Football coach and co-head track coach.
Another coach in our district has called our track team a glorified football program. (we are not allowed spring football or organized practices until June 1st)
On our evaluations turned in by student-athletes:
"I really thought we would get to do some more football related activities during track"
"We had to stay after practice and work on the route tree by ourselves"
and my favorite: "i only went out for track because coach said it would help me with football- I had a blast- still love football but I would consider doing track in college"
Track Numbers: 2018- 62, 2017-54, 2016-43, 2015-34, 2014-28 Football Numbers: 2017-112, 216-92, 2015-84, 2014-78
Now we need to start winning a few games.

Maybe I’m an idiot but that’s what track should be IMO. I wouldn’t feel slighted.

With track becoming a dying sport, I would think the motivation to participate wouldn’t matter.
I did track to watch girls in shorts jump over stuff...

While it is not always the case, many sports programs would benefit from being run like a well run football program. The organization, the passion, the instruction, discipline, etc, would benefit most every sport. There is a girls soccer program in my area that is consistently successful and the coach has been described as running his program with a football mentality. This same school has very little success in any other sport.

I think he meant it as an insult but who cares?

As a football coach its better than having your football team called a "glorified track team"
Best piece of advice I have EVER been given, i mean EVER .."you cant please everybody, so don't waste your time trying" , as a coach youre going to piss someone off somewhere.
Its all part of gig

One of the best head coaches I know told his kids “if you don’t like wrestling or track you better make the basketball or baseball team because you are going to be doing something in the offseason.”

With track becoming a dying sport, Huh? Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. This post spring's 4x100 champion relay team was 3/4 FORMER football players.

Look at the top 10 4x1 times in the nation, 9 of the top 10 are from Texas and I can tell you that just about all of the kids on those relay teams also play football.

Did you beat him in football last year? You either beat him in football and he's jealous or he sees good work being done and is getting a bit scared. If you were irrelevant to him he wouldn't be talking about you so he obviously has his eye on what you are doing out of either fear or jealousy.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. This post spring's 4x100 champion relay team was 3/4 FORMER football players. At least where I am, rural school struggle to fill full track teams....springs sports in general having been suffering

Participation in any sport is helped by the passion of the coach/coaches. Early in my career, I would get really upset when any kid didn't want to run track. My wife told me "you will probably never coach a kid that was as passionate about track as you." And she is probably correct. I also feel I have had good participation at every place I've been, because my passion has rubbed off on the athletes at those schools (along with other factors...community pride, etc).

We had a passion guy.....numbers were at about 7 with 5 throwers. We had a relatable guy.....numbers went to 30. Bottom line is, do you care about the why?

I agree....the real trick is finding a relatable guy who is also passionate?

This must be a coach who is jealous of the fact that you are getting numbers that maybe he can't get. Any coach who is worth his whistle knows that football and track go hand in hand. Track obviously helps to develop your kids as athletes, but it also provides confidence and fosters a competitive nature with your team that carries over into summer 7 on 7's and then into the season.Sometimes beating a school during the track season gives you the edge when you play them in the football season.
Just my thoughts

It’s a total compliment and your track program benefits from you coaching in it!
