We played a team Friday night that was cutting our linebackers. I know there are different opinions on the cut block (mainly if you're an offensive or defensive guy), but most of that deals with people on the LOS. These guys were coming out and diving at legs and/or hitting the ground and rolling into our guys. That seems awful suspect to me, to say the least.

Nope. We're in Tennessee. We kept telling the ref on our side what was happening. Know what he told us? "It's not my call."

Being an option team, I wish we could cut down field. But in PA we aren't allowed. I don't think it's bush league unless you are in a state that doesn't allow it so you don't drill for it, therefore the kids aren't as able to protect themselves. So in Tennessee it's just cheating. Like it is in most states.
My least favorite response from all officials "it's not my call".....well if you can see it and someone else isn't calling it and the players safety is at stake it most certainly is your call IMO!

kdcoach brought up a very good point. The kids are not in a position to protect themselves, due to not practicing on how to defend the cut block. I wish we could cut down field as well, but the rules are in place that we cannot cut outside the tackle box (federation) so kids who are aligned outside the tackle box should not have to worry about getting cut.
BUSH LEAGUE, IMO.

since we play by ncaa rules, we cut the mess out of them Same in Mass. We cut all the time. We have had some clueless Refs tell us it's "unethical" and coaches complain...but maybe if they coached their kids up to defend the cut block, they wouldn't have that problem.

If cut blocking is within the rules, I don't see why this should be an issue.

That's just it. It's illegal. So they are being taught an illegal technique, and on top of that the refs let 'em do it.

Well, Holding is an illegal technique but it gets taught...and refs let'em get away with it.
As for the original question...adjust on the fly, teach your kids how to defeat a cut block and move on....is it illegal in your state, yes....but if they are not calling it, give your kids the tools to overcome the adversity of not working it in practice.

i all depends on where you lbers were. if your lbers were in the free blocking zone, then it is legal to cut them.
if they are not in the free blocking zone, then yes it is illegal.

this is "negligence" in its truest form. the refs have a job to do, they are to enforce the rules so that players dont get harmed. a ref who shrugs it off as "not my call" needs to be on camera answering that way. .... and a nice letter with his name and film to the ref squad should do the trick. cutting outside of the fbz (including a man not on the los to begin with!) is clearly dangerous, illegal and unethical...but worse is the ref looking the other way. a 15 year old that gets his knees blown out and suffers life long limitations certainly went into that game hoping that the refs enforce rules to give him the best chance for coming out of the game with his knees intact. protecting yourself from cut blocks in the fbz is much different from having to do it outside of the fbz. its bush and i have seen teams in this county do it. sissies.
