Former HC talking about fresh/soph kids, "That kid will never amount to anything." Turns out he was wrong EVERY single time. Old school assistant who hadn't coached football for years, "You have to be in a 50 to stop the run." It's frustrating to hear guys write kids off so early in their high school years. A LOT can happen in 4 years before they become seniors. The best programs I have been part of have developed all of the younger kids and always had players that surprised them down the road in terms of production.

One more that I forgot, but can't believe I did forget and we all have been around, the OC/DC that says: "give me your worse 11 and I will beat you thanks to my system" Jimmy's and Joe's my man, Jimmy's and Joe's.

Running over my kid with a gator would definitely do the trick. What a dope! You're preaching to the choir! He has done SO many things that just makes me think "How the flip do you still have a job? Or how did you even get a job in the first place!?"

I had a really uncooperative assistant once say "I don't like that play" in front of the kids. Same assistant once got into an argument with me in front of the QB/Rec when I said the #2 receiver has an out and he said something else. So he sent the manager to get the playbook from his car. Sure enough I was right. I trust he's no longer around

Really, about the only time I’ll write a freshman off is if they have a terrible work ethic. Rarely happens that a lazy kid as a freshman will become a hard enough worker as a Sr to become a good, trustable player. Lot of hard working freshmen become lazy as they age, but in 20 years I don’t know the opposite has happened more 4-5 times.

Not exactly heard....but did. Many years ago, coaching at a small school, and we had this guy on staff who we pretty much were stuck with. We eliminated most things (like actually coaching) from his duties. We had a local company donate a bunch of powerade in bottles. I told the guy to take the powerade and put them on ice and the kids could have them at halftime. No cups to mess with, etc. To cut to the chase, at halftime it's not going well, we go to our halftime area and I tell one of the other assistants to distribute the powerade (the guy who iced it wasn't allowed with the team at the half). A minute or so later, the assistant yells "what powerade?". I yell "the ones in the cooler beside you". He says, "there's no powerade there". I go, "yes there is"........he proceeds to open the cooler, jam his arm in the ice up to elbow to show me there are no bottles in there--and immediately withdraws a sticky arm. They guy had opened up all of the bottles and poured them over the ice.

Another day, this one is not football related, we were talking about teacher pay in Florida and he said "It has to be the 51st or 52nd worst state in terms of pay." I asked "how many states do you think there are?" And he immediately knew something was up, but he really didn't know the answer so he just goes "are you guys effing with me?...Puerto Rico is a state right...ummmm...dammit how many states are there?" He thought there were 51 or 52 states, literally. I'm going to assume he was joking to add emphasis to his point. I say stuff like this all the time. For example, we played against a really bad corner one game and one of our main goals was to pick on him consistently. On the scouting report the kids get on Hudl over the weekend, I wrote. "#15 is the 23rd best football player on the field at all times." Only a few of my players understood the joke when we came back during our Monday morning meting.

Here's the most recent....
at a jamboree at our school last week, Im sitting in the endzone watching 2 other teams play. Defense is a 3-3, stunting almost every play. Offense is 4-wide spread. On every play, the C would either base block or cut the nose, leaving either a G or RB to deal with the 2 blitzing LB's. The coaches on the sideline are going CRAZY, yelling every single demeaning, belittling thing you can imagine to a group of OL..... yet not once did they tell them HOW to fix the issues they were facing. This went on for all 4 drives I was watching. The kids were working their @$$es off while the coaches were too dumb or thick-headed to make an adjustment. It was really painful to watch.

Yeah, I think it's hard to take someone seriously when they don't take themselves seriously. In that regards some kids write themselves off and that's a little different for sure.

We had a conversation about it. I only tipped the iceberg with the stories I included. There's another coach on this board kutch037 that was part of that staff and could verify and expand on the unbelievable assertions of the header.

Had a coach that had spent the 1st 2 yrs at a new program helping out with varsity (he was a carry over from the last staff, local guy, loved by kids, ended up mainly being stat guy and get back coach. After yr 2 I had opportunity to ask him to move to middle school and hire a better coach in his place with the varsity. Head middle school guy was a 1st year teacher straight out of college and was new to area. Pre season went ok getting ready for first game. Got killed like 42 to 14 ... after the game (I wasnt able to go) I called the HC to see what happened. During Pregame warm ups the DC installed the Prowler defense... This was when it was just starting to be seen on TV some. He told the kids if he called it that they were to creep around presnap and then on the snap, go whereever and do what ever they wanted to. 1st play ... he called it ... they did just that.. and Offense ran FB dive for 70 yd td .... they scored everytime he called it ... finally HC told him not to call it again. Yeah... I bet middle school kids are not blitzing the "A" gaps, they are probably thinking they are "edge rushers", leaving the middle wide open.

One day we were on special teams and he watched our punter shank one. And he said "Guys if I would have been a kicker instead of a QB I would still be in the league." I asked if he was serious. He said "yes, of course." I said "so you chose to be a teacher instead of being in the NFL just so you could play high school QB." He said "Yeah, QB is the man." I asked him to punt or kick and he declined. Yeah the coach that tries to convince the kids, "I almost went Pro" coach... This reminds me of a basketball coach, that coached at a school I was. Prior to making cuts, he would lecture the kids that there should be no shame in being cut, he was once cut himself. The final cut for the Phoenix Suns. That would have been around the time the Suns had "Thunder" Dan Majerle, so the rest of the coaches used to refer to him as "Lightning"... I think the guy may have played one or two years at an NAIA school.

I once knew a coach I met up with at a clinic and congratulated him for his win over us that year. He said "I can take your 11 and beat you with my 11". My response was, "dude, we've played 5 times and the only one you won was the last one"
