I guess this is just a "what are you up to if you don't have spring ball?" type of thread.
Here in Michigan we have school 'til June 8th.
The day after Memorial Day we kick off our annual "early birds" where the kids come in and condition before school. I'm super pumped to meet this current JV squad. If you don't know what I do I am the JV OC in a great program, going into my 4th year at this school. Have bounced around never staying anywhere else more than 2 years. Prior to this stop I was a varsity OC/OL/Assistant HC.
After Early Birds, we will start throwing, and man am I excited. The 9th grade class went 1-8 last year which is ABYSMAL for our program. Other Michiganders who know who I am can attest. With that said they had some inexperienced coaches working with them, and 6 of their 8 losses were by a TD or less.
We have a rising 9th grade QB who is 6'3, has some decent wheels, and a legit arm that we're pulling up. IMO he should be on varsity, not JV, but I won't kick a gift horse in the mouth. A legit RB that we're pulling up, and might have a sophomore that played for us last year who is also a legit DB/RB.
Man I'm excited, but also restless.
What are you guys (who don't have spring ball) up to? Man, I'm restless guys. Ready to get going with this new group, and shut some mouths. I always feel bad for struggling classes. Their classmates get down on them, asking them what happened last night (often right in front of me in my class), don't believe in what they're capable of. We're in a community of high expectations and they're hard enough on themselves.
Sorry if this post is weird and rambly. Had a few adult pops.

Well, now that I'm retired I've been marking time by enjoying not being in the weight room or going to 7 on 7's. I'm almost giddy thinking about the video I won't watch but what I'm REALLY looking forward to is waking up at 6 AM on the first day of 2-a-days, going to the bathroom and going back to sleep.

I'm getting antsy, we're so close to June 4th and I'm pumped to get started on my first season as Defensive Coordinator. I've been working onagonizing over my defensive PowerPoint after going to every Glazier I could and learning all I can about our defense and how to keep it as simple as humanly possible for our kids (and coaches).
These last few weeks have been awful on my nerves. So close yet so far and I'm ready to get started and get this anxiety off my shoulders. I've also been having weird dreams where I get lost in strange places without my pants... I'm sure that means something.

While we have spring ball, there was plenty to keep me busy until then...
1) Install schedule / Practice plans. I made practice plans for the entire spring + working on summer/fall practice plans. Tentative ones of course, subject to change, but at least there is something down on paper that can be modified (saves me time later on, especially with family responsibilities).
2) Depth charts. Make a tentative depth chart. Make sure you have enough positions covered + possible "oh s#$t" plans in case kids miss, get hurt, are ineligible, etc...For example, during our spring, we had guys ineligible, in a spring sport (play-offs & track qualifiers) etc...who ALL played LB and we literally had 1 LB left. Having an "oh S#$t" plan ahead of time saved us headaches, confusion, etc...
3) Tentative game plans. What defenses will you see this year? Might as well practice vs. those looks at some point, + can save some time in the fall.
4) Enjoy the last few days before the grind starts...sounds like your doing good with that (adult sodas)!

Are you allowed to meet with your kids during the school day like lunch or athletic period? This can be a great time to go through install so they’re not completely clueless once you start.

Technique, footwork, etc. Do you do any small group stuff before your Early Birds? Also, when you start throwing in the summer, how often do you guys go? We're a smaller school up north, and I'm always curious as to how other schools handle their off-season stuff.

Our varsity is more active than that, but with our JV kids being 9th and 10th graders we figure to let them enjoy their summer and let them be kids before we dive in for the long haul. Some of those JV kids will get pulled up to varsity, and we tend to go pretty deep into the playoffs every year. Some of those young guys aren't prepared for how long the season can be if you make a big run. Also, we are one of few JV squads doing things with our kids over the summer aside from lifting, so there really isn't a big arms race around here to keep up with. We're usually ahead of the curve by just doing what we do.

Funny thing you begin to realize is that all of those issues that you thought were very important when you were coaching or when you thought that "everyone" was depending on your team to win...you retire, and you realize that no one outside of your staff and team and their families really cares all that much about your football program. Kinda weird.

Man, if your nerves are shot now you might not make it to the season when you gotta make the big call on 3 and short w/ the game on the line! I jest, I jest. Seriously, this time of year is stress free for me. Go to practice a few times, but no opponent to prepare for, no what ifs to think about, no HC questioning me all day about how we are gonna handle something. I sleep like a baby. As far as what to do when you start getting antsy, go to clinics, watch film etc.. or pick up a spring sport. I coach golf, which is one of the greatest coaching gigs in the world. I play 9 holes for free about 3 days a week, and it keeps my out of almost every staff meeting at school

Fellow Michigander here - we've been doing some QB Club stuff and player-led drills here and there. As soon as school finishes (first week of June) our strength and conditioning program gets started. There's a week of team camp in there, some team building volunteer stuff, and 7-on-7's all in June and July. I might go to 7-on-7's "to coach the centers" because I'll have nothing else going on.
The school I teach at goes through the end of June, which is a real PITA from a work perspective but keeps me focused on something besides football for a while and makes the summer go quick.
