Our HC just forwarded me this email...sometimes all you can do is laugh.
Hello
This is So-And-So's grandmother. So-And-So a has really bad sunburn on his shoulders.
And I don’t want him to wear shoulder pads.
But he will be ok in few days.
I am kind of shocked I have never heard this as an excuse before. I have seen some crazy sunburns but never had a kid miss practice over one.

What a funny coincidence, just had a kid miss the entire two weeks of spring ball for a sunburn (it did look pretty bad, but really, two weeks?). To make matters worse, the kid loved Superman, would wear a Superman shirt nearly every day. So of course our kids call him Superman now, but always add in that his only weakness is the Sun.

It sounds strange but she could easily get a doctor's backing on the situation if it's a bad enough burn. And, to be honest, a bad enough sunburn could get infected if the kid isn't careful.

I had a horrible sunburn on my back in college. Developed a fever, could barely put a shirt on, etc. The burn hurt bad for 3 days, then started blistering, which also hurt. Eventually, it peeled and itched like no other. I remember waking up in the morning and there would be tons of dead skin in my bed. Since then, I don't got shirtless unless I put on a ton of sunscreen. Is this case, I could see why the kid would need to miss practice. I would talk to him about how he needs to make better choices about when to be in the sun, though!

Not to make excuses but we once had a fair skinned QB who had literal blisters on his shoulders after a day of 7 on 7. I think we gave him a few days out of pads.

Had a really bad sunburn once when I was like 12 tthat when combined with my eczema made it that I could barely move and had to use my grandfathers cane to walk around 😂 I literally looked like fried chicken it hurt to shower move do anything. But my grandmother didn’t give me any sympathy she gave me an earful about how I didn’t take of myself well enough! Learned my lesson there.

I think I was just shocked to hear sun burn as an excuse and shocked I had never heard it.
I have had bad sunburns so I know how bad they can get. I just don't think at the worst, that I could allow my mom or grandma to call that excuse in, no matter how bad it hurt.

This made me think about my mother but in a different way. There would have been NO WAY that I could use sunburn as an excuse. Both her and my grandmother still give me heck about wearing sunscreen because I tan so easily.
I've been an adulting for a while now (sometimes wish I was still a high school kid playing football and not having to worry about bills) but my mother STILL gets onto me about having my sun hat and putting on sun screen. Every year she buys me multiple bundles of Banana boat spf 100 the week before spring practice...
I'm definitely blessed and spoiled!

I have an heightened risk of cancer due to a very bad burn as a child -- which was due to a Summer Camp that took us to a water park without our parents permission and because of that, the counselors wouldn't let me out of sight (aka INSIDE) and b/c they didn't have a note, wouldn't let me put on sunscreen. My parents could have won me a ton of money in a suit.
There is no way I could have made it to practice, let alone be out in the sun. I was only allowed to go outside to go to the doctor.
Let's just say, my upper back and shoulders were covered in a dark red sunburn (nearly black). I had blisters the size of half dollars. I've peeled and blistered before -- but not like that. I could only lay on my stomach on the couch. I constantly was sweating with a bad fever. I had migraines. I was throwing up (I had "sun poisoning"). I could barely put a t-shirt on two weeks later but had to when I made my doctors visit -- which was agonizing. I really wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. Aloa and strong pain killers didn't do anything, I just had to wait it out.
Sun burn is real for us pale folks. And I've struggled since to protect myself. I once put sun lotion on every hour at a water park -- my now wife at the time (who gets a very dark tan) thought i was crazy -- and I still blistered a bit.

I think we have a sunburn denier!!! Don't deny the science!!! But on the topic of emails, I had a mom email me so that her son could leave practice early to let the dog out to pee. Same kid missed a game for his brothers wedding mid-season. My damn brother better be smart enough to not have his wedding during football season.

One of our better players took a week off from school (and football, duh) to go to a wedding in a warm and sunny state... came back and wondered why he wasn't starting anymore. I just don't get it, man.
