Is it me or do a lot of threads lately seem to turn into arguments? I also know there is a difference between debate done in a professional way, and when it gets sarcastic and personal. Comments questioning somebody's intelligence or ability to read don't really have a place here.
Yesterday on spring break (which is Minnesota is funny because we have INCHES of snow and more coming) I met with a couple other coaches from different schools. We all have different philosophies but yet we all learned from each other and we never insulted each other. So maybe before you type that snarky remark think "would I say that if we were all in the same room at the white board?"
I am not Mr. Sensitivity. But what I loathe is when I login to start reading an otherwise really good thread and it turns into a bitch session between two coaches. I couldn't care less about feelings but it detracts from the message when we start to insult one another on the board.

I've been noticing that as well. It has even stopped me from posting a couple times because I have thought, "I dont wanna get into a pissing match with _________________"

Seems thats all some do
There are even some guys who don't post here even semiregularly but will get in on a discussion out of nowhere just to start an argument then you don't see them again for months

I can honestly say that, more than laundry, or equipment inventory, or painting the field, or meetings that go on forever, or crazy parents, my absolute least favorite parts of coaching are the pissing matches that we tend to get into among ourselves. It would be nice if we kept things professional and respectful on here.

Completely agree! There's a few very knowledgeable coaches that I've lost a lot of respect for recently because of this. Debates and questioning can lead to some of the best learning, when done in an appropriate manner.
Too many threads have turned in d!ck measuring contests lately.

But what I loathe is when I login to start reading an otherwise really good thread and it turns into a bitch session between two coaches. I couldn't care less about feelings but it detracts from the message when we start to insult one another on the board. I am probably guilty of this somewhat. For me, it is when the person in the discussion can not concede that the other may have a valid point. For example, recently in a discussion (that has since had parts deleted) about QB training, one poster cut and pasted a workout for qbs supposedly used by a HOF college football coach. The problem was that the HOF football coach's work out would not be considered "best practices" and could be considered detrimental to athletes. It was similar to someone saying the best way to get kids into shape is to deny them water, because that is what Paul Bryant and Bo Schembechler believed. When this was pointed out to the poster, it immediately became a "who are you, what is your resume, look at this HOF college football coach's record he knows more than you blah blah..." I fully admit that my replies to that thread were intended to not only present the facts, but also to make sure that those with less experience were not persuaded by the appeal to authority that this poster consistently displays. I also think some of it comes from the way some people word their posts. There are some here who definitely post in a manner that reflects a "I know what I am doing, you don't" attitude. Also, some of the tonal issues may be because of differences in circumstances. I have seen several posts that allude to a "that may work where you are, but here we play 'real' football, and it won't work" things. There have been several posts regarding defensive coverage where some knowledgeable coaches basically look down on anything not "Saban" or "TCU" yet they never really explain their points. They just talk Saban or TCU jargon.

Was reading through this earlier today thinking wow that's too bad, it's never happened to me and then BAM! try to contribute to a discussion on another thread and... I've noticed that it's really just a handful of regular posters (like 4-5) plus random newbs who tend to start these, though they drag others into the muck with them when "Harambe time" starts. Even most of those 4-5 regulars post useful/insightful content the majority of the time. I know I've inadvertently done that at times, myself, but it was never intentional. We're all in this together and we're all here to share info and get better. This site has made me a much better coach than I ever would have been working my way up through the ranks on my own, so I'm just grateful we have this community. Just like there's no universal terminology in this game and there are lots of ways to skin a cat, we need to understand that no one knows everything about this game. There are people on here who know things about this game that Nick Saban or Bill Belichek don't. It's asinine when people just want to make comments to demean other coaches.

The best thing about the board is that you can get honest feedback to your real life situations. I wonder if there is inherently a little condescension that comes from the openness of dialogue.
My goal is to never make it or take it personal.

I've been a member for over a decade and have less than a thousand posts for the very reason the OP stated. I don't have time for the bullsh*t. Personally, I'd rather look and learn, than debate.
This site goes through phases (every now and then) where things become less than professional. Having said that, this site is far better than other similar type boards.
I treat this site like the mall...I come in looking for something specific, and once I find it, I get the hell out.

I read some comments in which it seems like someone is trying to help but also tell you how what they're doing is superior to what you're doing or thinking. I feel like tone is the critical factor, you just dont read it the same way someone writes and personally if it sounds snarky or douchey then thats how i interpret it.

You require members to use their real name, and where they coach youll see alot fewer keyboard hard a$$es
It wont completely stop the problem, egos will always abound, and some people will undoubtedly leave, but if youre honest you have nothing to worry about
Hell in some cases find guys who start the most $hit arent even coaching, or have ever coached
I own 3 boards myself, the only one weve ever had squabbles on (as few as they were) was the one i lifted the screen name rule
Ill gladly change mine back to my old screen name , post where and what i coach

I've developed a one reply policy. You can usually tell somebody's intentions in a thread in one reply or less. If I feel somebody is getting preachy/snarky/know-it-all on one of my posts I will reply once and see how they handle it. If they don't even acknowledge I may have a point I ignore it from that point on. Let 'em have the last word, I'll save my blood pressure for important things.

But wingtol - you didn't know "right shoulder to right shoulder (and left to left)."
And as was so graciously pointed out, EVERYBODY knows that.

One thing that has become clear, if I read long enough, the answer I think is so clever, smart, or whatever, will be written by somebody else. I would warn against experience being king. Fresh eyes are a wonderful thing.

I am pretty sure there may have been a rant or two in there somewhere. I just know that everyone I know I tell about the site, encourage other coaches to get on here, and they all know who I am. I have found that I post in spurts, post for a week then just stop, because not sure I can add anything useful. Really need to work on my self-esteem lol.

Foremost, I can post about situations I have been in without concern of it coming back to bite me. But more relevant to the topic is that keeping it anonymous allows us to judge ideas on their validity as opposed to who said it. You really want it to become a !@#$ meassuring contest, then force everyone to state their name and experience. Every discussion or disagreement will be ended with the trump card of success- in essence whoever has the best resume is right in all discussions. I have coached with guys who coached in the league, guys who have been d1 coordinators, and guys who are in various hofs...they are as wrong as the rest of us.

I wonder if this is the reason "chats" on twitter ie #hogfbchat, #txhsfbchat in my experience are very positive environments compared to forums in general? Can't really hide yourself as easily on twitter, especially if your players, parents, and fellow coaching staff are following your feed.
I started out coaching youth ball and have now "graduated" to coaching on varsity. The same "tone" issues were on dumcoach.com from time to time.
