This season we open against a new non-conference opponent and I would like to get some of their film, but I honestly don't know how to go about it.
Do I ask them directly for film from last season? Do I ask one of their opponents from last year? Should I even bother with getting film for week one?
I feel like this is a silly question, but I don't want to ruffle feathers and want to make sure I use proper etiquette.

PC Answer: Ask them for 2 games, give them 2 games
What everyone else is trying to do: ask friends to if they have said films.

I would be straight up and ask them. Talk about how they’re new on the schedule and it’d be fair for both sides to get a look, maybe kiss his ass about how good you think they are looking at some of their scores from the previous season or how another coach you respect said they’re doing a really good job with the program. From my experience the only coaches who haven’t been willing to share in situations like that are bums who don’t last long in the profession.

To be honest if a new opponent is asking for film from last year at this time of year we are not gonna trade. I have no desire to see their film from last year, just don't see the point. I'd rather wait for an exchange in season. We had a school want to send us a lot of film from some new teams we'll be playing this up coming season for film we have of their new opponents. We turned it down. So much changes from year to year I wanna see them in the season we play not past seasons.

If you open against a new opponent, I'd sell a film trade. I know things change from year to year, but you're not going to get film from next year before you face them.
In the past, in situations like this, I've scouted opponent's fall scrimmage just to see personnel. Scheme changes, but usually is pretty similar and film is often enough to give me an idea of what we'll see.

I agree I'd rather see the current team not the prior years team, but I feel something is better than nothing.

I agree with the above posts. Just send two most recent and ask for two most recent. Wish them luck and see them opening night. Anybody who refuses when you guys open against each other is a schmuck.

Like I said so much can change from one season to the next you could spend time breaking them down then all of a sudden they go from flexbone to spread or a 4-4 to a 3-3... Just too many variables for me to rely on old film to get ready.

I wouldn't want to prepare, or even have an inkling, for them to come out in one thing and give us something completely different. I would just do some research myself. Check Hudl highlights, YouTube, stats sites, etc and get a general picture of what they have run in the past. If they have a scrimmage I would definitely be sending some scouts.

The team I coach is in this boat this year, and we were in this boat 4 years ago as well. In both cases, we reached out to other coaches that we knew had played them the year before and got film. You do run the risk, as others have mentioned, of the team changing schemes and having any work you've done being rendered moot, but at least as far as we are concerned, my head coach would rather have something than nothing. And if they don't change schemes, then you at least know the basic structure of their offense and defense by the time you exchange scrimmage film later this year.

I’d google and hudl highlight them, outside of that I wouldn’t ask their coach bc I’d be getting scrimmage film

Ask to trade last two scrimmages of the pre-season. Work behind the scenes to get whatever you can.

Just ask and offer an exchange...HOWEVER, Make sure he's not a first year HC! Whatever film you get from him won't tell you a thing and you spill all the beans.
