Seeing on Twitter that some schools are already practicing and even doing stuff with other teams. We’re not going to start until spring ball in May. Curious to see what others are doing. I think practicing this early is counter productive.

A local coach (SD section) started a 7on7 league where only HS teams were allowed to participate. They have already completed their first 3 of 6 or 8 weeks.

No specific start date in Southern Section. You can practice 6 days a week right now if you wanted to.

Coach Tua- Can you tell me what coach in SD started that? We've been kicking around the same idea.

Ive been in programs that have done it both ways. In 2013, we Started in January going once a week, twice a week by February and four times a week by the end of April. Also been in a program that didn’t do a lick until April. Had success both ways; failed both ways.
I feel it’s most beneficiary in the early stages of building a program. It helps you establish the importance of practice and expectations and seriousness of what you’re trying to do. However, if you’ve got a good culture established practicing so much can sharpen the knife until it’s dull.
When creating your calendar you’ve really got to get a gauge on your returners. Not so much how talented they are, but how bought in they are.

I know we all want to be great coaches and we obviously believe in what we do, but at what point do the kids tune us out? At what point do they get tired of hearing the same coaching point, the same jokes and the same motivational speech? The more I’ve been coaching the more I realize we should be trying to get our kids to want more, not less. And it’s hard for them to want more when you start practicing only a couple months after the season has ended.
