Every year the Army Navy game gets me thinking about the Black Lion Award program. You DW guys know what I'm talking about. For all of you other coaches, go to www.coachwyatt.com and read the story about the Black Lion Award. Very briefly, The Black Lion Award honors the memory of Don Holleder who was an Army football player back in the 50's and went on to become a Major in the US Army, only to be killed on the field of battle while selflessly trying to save wounded soldiers during one of the most horrific battles of the Vietnam War. It costs absolutely nothing to sign your school up and it's a terrific way to honor one of your players who shows the same kind of sacrifice, dedication, and love of team that Don Holleder while at West Point and later on while giving his life for his country. The player you choose to honor will receive a personalized certificate along with an official US Army Black Lion patch for their letterman jacket. In our town, we are actually blessed to have a real Black Lion who was in the actual battle, along with Lt. General (retired) James Shelton present our award each year during our banquet! It's one of the highlites of our season. I guarantee you will love every part of the Don Holleder story and and want to sign up your team.

No problem. Hugh Wyatt is a GREAT Guy and he's responsible for "finding" the Don Holleder story, contacting the family and the US Army and making the whole thing happen. Long ago, in another life, I played WR for a minor league team that Hugh coached. I re-connected (accidently) with him through his website. Pass the word to other coaches about signing up for the Black Lion.
