We have 4 middle schools that send to our high school (not big schools) - our numbers were down last year! I’ve been trying to generate PR - anyway to drum up interest. Have ideas in spring & summer with open house, workouts etc.
I wanted to give out incoming 8th graders T-shirt’s to wear Around their schools, something cool that kids take notice too! Just something for them to see when kids are wearing them!
Any ideas, design or slogans! You Coaches on this site are pretty good with coming up with some good ideas. Please let me know any that you have.

We don’t do it. But one idea I like is to do and 8 grade signing day. Like a senior signing his NLI. Have all the 8 graders come up. Sign a paper you type up committing to your program. Take pictures of them in a hat or jersey. Invite their parents. Have some snacks or food. Generally make a fuss over them.

I love the idea of the signing day to drum up interest and get these guys invested early, but does anyone see it as a slippery slope in the "me" era?

We've decided to do one this year for our 8th Grade Player/Parent informational meeting. I've been working on drafting the actual letter that will also serve as a code of conduct contract-type deal so they know from the get-go what the expectations for them are if they join our program. Probably going to throw in some "what you can expect from your coaches" stuff too. Going to bust out the school backdrop and tablecloth, get the photographers there, the school mascot. Want it to be YUGE for the kids because we need to generate excitement.

It’s not like each kid has 3 hats at the table from different schools and is deciding, it’s for one school. Just a fun way to get kids excited.

For the record....this does sound fun! But holy s**t everything else in a kids life has already been hyped to death. It feels like this would just be adding one more thing to the list of, normal course of the day events, that have been blown into grand proportions.

Get them into the weight room with your high school kids and start teaching them how you do things within your program at the high school level. We do it after school by splitting the middle school track practice a couple days a week. 7th grade goes to practice while 8th grade goes to the weight room at the high school. And don't just take the 8th grade football players or the 8th grade track kids...take every athlete in the 8th grade that wants to come and workout. You never know why a kid didn't play football in middle school, so whatever the reason is it might not be valid in your high school program. Some attention from the high school staff and the high school players might be what is needed to convince them to give football an honest shot and it could be a kid that helps your program over the next 4 years.
I like this time of year because it benefits pretty much all our programs. Our high school kids are forced to learn how to teach when working with our 8th graders and they see first hand their influence. Our 8th graders get past the nervousness of being at the high school, working with the head coaches at the high school, getting to know the high school players while they are still in middle school. This makes the transition next fall a lot easier. And it makes our summer workouts better because we have already taught a high percentage of the 8th graders how we want things done. It also helps our 7th graders to see what things will look like next year when they are the oldest kids in their building.

We do our elementary camp in May while school is still in session. We feel we might get better attendance. Maybe, for those with multiple junior high feeder schools this would be doable.

I think a camp that runs before spring practice starts (like the week before) or a camp that runs in the evening after spring practice for a week or so would be big if you have spring ball.

After our spring football is over we have a week where the 8th graders from our feeder middle schools will come out and work with our 9th grade coaches. They do not wear pads and each practice only last for a little over an hour; we are focusing on introducing them to our language and teaching them fundamentals and drills. At the end of the week we get them together and run 4-5 of our base plays on offense. This gives us the chance to start evaluating players and it also gets the kids excited.
