I do a ton of culture stuff with my team. Have been looking for material and systems that help guide your thoughts when it come to teaching character. I've stumbled across the R.E.A.L Man program a few times but have now become really interested in it. Has anybody used it? or is there anything else out there worth looking at? I like a lot of the Joe Erhmman stuff and it falls in line with this program but before I spend the money I thought I'd try to get some feedback

Try The Boy Scout Manual. First page.
Embracing those character traits never fails.

Just coach... Doing this will take care of all that stuff you're worried about.

Yes, but Bobby Petrino isn’t being used as a front man for a character development program. Freeze also touted himself as a “Christian” man too.

What I’m saying is a lot of other “Christian” men do this too, they just haven’t been caught.

I'm big on doing the character development piece in my program. I think its important in the area I'm from. Dealing with a lot of single family homes and gang influence. I'm going to give it a go! They have some good e-clinic stuff in the Glazier Vault that i checked out

There is a user on here named CoachDP (I think that's his username anyway). He has put together what he calls his CAL program (pretty sure it stands for Character and Leadership) - and it's very well developed. He's implemented the program at both the youth and HS levels with tremendous success. I personally know coaches who have implemented his program with success as well. He doesn't sell it, he'll give it to you.
If you're interested, he's the kind of guy who will bend over backwards to help you with it. He doesn't post on here too much, but pretty sure I saw him comment on something in the past week or two, so he should have an active account. If you can't find him, PM me, I have his contact info.

I've stumbled across the R.E.A.L Man program a few times but have now become really interested in it. Has anybody used it? I haven't used it, but evidently Hugh Freeze endorses it. Hugh Freeze also endorsed the local gentlemen's escort service for his team before he got in trouble. "Just wait boys, I have a program that will make you a REAL man" But in all seriousness, I've heard good things about the R.E.A.L. Man program in regards to character development. Definitely worth a look.

We have used the R.E.A.L. Man Program and like it a lot. With time constraints though have actually found the most meaningful for us has been just using the website information rather than the entire curriculum. One activity that's been great has been assigning each player a topic that they go home and research, then do a 1-2 minute presentation to the team. It's interesting to hear their perspectives on it and offers a lot of easy things to piggyback off of and initiate discussions about.

I have used the program for several years. Back several years ago we did handouts and sat in a classroom. Now we use the concepts of the program for a few minutes three days a week. For my spring sport I am our head girls track coach, and we use the program with them. We start with the acronym and then incorporate mini versions of the material. The program is a box set, but the part I use most is the book Building Blocks of Character. It is available on Amazon for about $15. It is a workbook style, but I pose a question and let them talk. I put them into groups to introduce one or two of the questions. Then we share as a team.
The results have been solid. We started the program in January. That month we had eight girls of 46 get written up. In February that number dropped to 1. We have less cussing at practice and the meets. We have less classroom issues. I had negative emails from teachers in January. In February I had 2 negative emails and 18 positive emails.
You don't necessarily need a program to teach character, but I am not smart enough to develop material. The biggest deal is setting an expectation and holding kids accountable to your expectations. When they make a mistake you coach them through it. When the do something well, you emphasize it.
If you love kids unconditionally, meaning as much on their worst day as you do on their best, you will make progress. If you have clear standards and hold kids accountable, you will improve the character decisions of your team. If you put them in adverse situations in workouts and push them through self-imposed limitations, you will improve mental toughness.
Frank DiCocco wrote The REAL Man Program several years ago. He cared about kids and wanted to help coaches. When he passed away, his parents made it their mission to carry on Frank's legacy. I enjoy speaking at clinics and sharing the benefits of the program. They use all of the proceeds of the program to fund scholarships for inner city kids.

I have a ton of issues i want to cover with the team and your right football if done right will build those situations for you to teach character. I just like a program that guides my thoughts and helps me build principles that i can lean on through out the season. I will check out that book for sure. Thank you again coach!!
