looking for examples of coaches who have used a point based format ie. playing winter and spring sports, lifting, grades etc. for players to earn their numbers and gear selection. Positive negatives you have faced and an example if you send me one. Thanks

Coach Plaa. how are you able to give different point totals for different sports? I know why you are doing it, but my AD would have purple smoke coming out of her ears. I have always wanted to do this, but I'm not sure when to implement it.

I make spring sports as mandatory as I can make them so those are all the same pride points. For the winter, we have a wrestling program that is barely surviving. Plus it is one of the hardest sports to get kids out for. So I talked to my AD and basketball coach first, and told them what I wanted to do. They both understood and were on board. None of our kids is going to choose to quit basketball and go wrestle for extra pride points.

We had a thread a few years ago about this... I'll try to find it once the ACT is done.

we give all spring sports the same point value and all spring sports the same BUT I understand why Plaa does it his way. His was my 1st example, I have modified over the years!

I can see using a system like this for players getting varsity numbers the first time. However, anytime you're taking numbers away from a player to give to another, you are just causing yourself problems that could have been avoided.

I tell them NO ONE owns a number. And a Senior who thinks he should have rights to "his number" is looking for a lazy way out. If anything, Seniors know our system and if they don't EARN the right to get their number than its completely on them.

We started this two years ago. We start keeping track of points in June. Lifting during the school year gets you bonus points in the summer. We have a minimum number of conditioning points that you must have before you can participate in a scrimmage or game. There is two ways to get points lifting in the summer or running after practice. We also use the points to pass out all the equipment. it is a big motivator for our guys. We went from about 4 people lifting per day to last year we had high 20s- low 30s per day. It has been great for us.

We’ve done it the past 2 years. Last year and this year our top point totals will be by our QB, he’s going to be a junior. Our seniors had bad seniority with and many of them didn’t get the number they wanted but they also didn’t play much so it was what it was. This past year I opened the points up to also going to games and activities. The kids had to put a pic on Twitter with the scoreboard or competition in the background. I gave the kids in a sport a chance to earn extra points. It also seemed to level the playing field for kids who work 3-4 days as well. Next year we were talking about points for grades or # of missing assignments for our not as academic kids. docs.google.com/document/d/1bkkXmCYpJxAed3dIir8o83A94Bnwywj5Z7-zgLSEEuU

You could hand out equipment that way and jerseys by seniority / returning players.
Just a thought anyway.
Now a days I can kind of see mommy and daddy being upset if “junior” was #20 last year and #89 this year if they bought tons of personalized apparel with #20 on it. Just something to think about.

Mommy and Daddy need to make Johnny come to practice then... Earn everything... all the time... that's my philosophy. Had a starting QB lose his number because he decided he didn't have to come to workouts. Freshman QB stole his number. Kid still ended up being the offensive MVP of our league, but did it in a different jersey number.
Amazing how a lot of the kids don't care if they get bigger, stronger, to become a good football player, but if you threaten to take their jersey number away, all of a sudden they are in the weightroom every day.
